Perhaps we Spoke too Soon

Emanating from the all-too-quiet night before the trade deadline is a story that we may not be as close to obtaining Dotel as was previously thought:

While the Braves have made inquiries about Royals closer Octavio Dotel, an American League source said there is no validity to reports that have indicated the teams are close to finalizing a deal.

In fact, this high-ranking official said Braves general manager John Schuerholz won't be able to get into any serious trade talks until the deal to bring Texas' Mark Teixeira and Ron Mahay to Atlanta is finalized on the Rangers' end. It's expected to be completed on Tuesday after all necessary medical reviews are completed.

All the rumors from various sources seem to indicate that the Royals prefer Kyle Davies in return for Dotel over any other player. The Mariners are believed to be the other team interested in Dotel, and they have offered minor league outfielder Wladimir Balentien. The Dodgers have also expressed interest. It would seem that the Braves would have the upper hand in ANY trade with Kansas City seeing as how their GM Dayton Moore was John Schuerholz's assistant. Another rumor that came from SI.com had us sending Brent Lillibridge to KC for Dotel, but that has also apparently been deemed invalid.

I certainly hope we get this Teixeira deal done this morning so that JS has time to swing other trades which he deems necessary. Remember, we still have to trade away Wil Ledezma, and one would think we'll also get rid of Scott Thorman.
