Minor League Recaps: 5/17

Norfolk 0, Richmond 4

  • J. Anderson - 2-5 RBI,
  • B. Jones - 2-4 2 2B, 2 RBI, K
  • J. Rouwenhorst - 9IP 5H 0R 1BB 3K

Rouwenhorst was a long time Angels farmhand who pitched primarily out of the bullpen until last season. He became a minor league free agent and Braves picked him up in the offseason to fill out the the Richmond rotation. He really seems to have taken to starting this season and I wonder if he could be of any value at the Major League level. Brandon Jones' May has been a lot more like his normal production with an OPS around.850 for the month.

Mississippi 9, Chattanooga 2

  • M. Young - 2-4 RBI, BB
  • J. Perry - 1-4 HR(10), 4 RBI, BB, K
  • J. Guzman - 2-4 2B, 3B, RBI
  • T. Redmond - 7IP 4H 2R 2BB 4K

Mississippi continues to roll in the month of May. Jason Perry has 10 homers in 30 games with the team and celebrated in style by making it a grand slam in the 7 run 7th inning. Redmond strung together another solid start after having a few bad ones. Also of note Kevin Gunderson made his AA debut tonight for the M-Braves and pitched a scoreless inning of relief. He is our best relief prospect right now and i would guess figures into the bullpen in the next season or so.

Wilmington 5, Myrtle Beach 0

  • Blake Wood - 6IP 1H 0R 2BB 10K

Yeah Blake Wood doesn't pitch for the Pelicans but when your team only gets 1 hit off him then really there isn't anything worth saying about them. Baseball America ranked Wood as the 5th best prospect in the Royals system in this years handbook. He is a hard thrower who has had some injury and control problems in the past but hasn't really had problems with either so far this year. Good for him.

Hickory 14, Rome 2

  • J. Heyward - 1-3 HR(5), RBI, BB
  • F. Freeman - 1-4 2B, RBI

Just to note: Jason Heyward played CF in this game. If anyone was there (looking at you secondbass) I'd love to hear how he looked. The dude is super athletic and much more lithe in person than I had anticipated so I think he can handle it for now but I don't see him staying there long term.
