Minor League Recaps: 5/20

Richmond 1, Norfolk 11

21 hits!!!!!! Are you freaking serious? Were they throwing underhanded? Every single starter for Norfolk had at least 2 hits. Not just 1. 2. The only good thing I can pull from this is Scott Thorman had a double which will help raise his trade value, which is nothing.

Mississippi 8, Tennessee 4

  • J. Perry - 2-4 2B, HR(11), 3 RBI
  • K. Kaaihue - 3-4 2B, HR(3), 2 RBI, K
  • G. Creek  - 2-4 RBI

The middle of the order lit up Cubs wide receiver Jeff Samardzjia with the trio totaling 4 XBH and 6 RBI for those who can add. Kala Kaaihue currently has a .938 OPS for the month of May. Has he started to adjust to AA just like he did High A? I don't know but the guy has always had a good command of the strike zone and even when he isn't hitting he is walking. That doesn't necessarily make him useful but it does help. Dan Smith did pitch a solid game giving up 2 runs in 6 innings.

Kinston 4, Myrtle Beach 3

  • B. Hicks - 2-4 2B, BB, 2K
  • P. Britton - 2-3 K
  • K. Cofield - 5IP 5H 1R 3BB 2K

Cofield continues to build on a strong May as he has posted a 1.93 ERA so far this month. The offense wasn't really there for him tonight as the Birds shook up the lineup moving Tyler Flowers down to 6th. Flowers is hitting .186 this month and has only 2 XBH in 60 ABs. His stats are a bit better on the road unsurprisingly and he actually sports a decent .824 OPS on the road but he really needs to find some kind of rhythm.

Rome 2, Asheville 10

  • S. Shults - 3-4 HR(2)

Nothing too spectacular here. Rome loses another game as they spiral out of control. The new guy did tack on his second homer this week which ties him for 3rd on the team. Maybe these guys can sign Mike Piazza now that he has retired.
