Minor League Recaps: 7/27

Lehigh Valley 9, Richmond 8 (Suspended in 13th Inning)

  • J. Anderson 2-6 2B, RBI, BB
  • B. Lillibridge 2-6 HR(2), 3 RBI, BB
  • D. Arnold 3-6 2 SB

You know Brent Lillibridge is hitting .410 in his last 10 minor league games. That includes 3 3-hit games and 2 2-hit games. His average is up to .216 now. I shudder to think what it was before that. I hope he can turn it around in the second half. He was really good in the second half last year and maybe this little run portends things to come. Hell, he has picked up 6 XBH in the last 10 games. He only has 13 for the entire season...

Chattanooga 0, Mississippi 9

  • M. Young 4-5 3B, 2 RBI
  • K. Kaaihue 1-4 2B, RBI
  • V. Pope 2-3 RBI, BB
  • C. Sencion 5IP 3H 0R 2BB 3K

Mississippi are winners of 3 straight and 6 of their last 7 and the currently have a 4 game lead in their division. Matt Young has been bringing the lumber lately with 10 hits in his last 3 games. I guess that is pretty good. Carlos Sencion bounced back after giving up 11 runs in his last 2 games. He tends to fair better as a starter than he does as a reliever. His ERA when starting is 2.97 though he has walked 18 in 33.1 innings. As a reliever he has an ERA approaching 7.00. I would think you'd let the guy start.

Winston-Salem 5, Myrtle Beach 8

  • G. Hernandez 1-2 2 BB
  • W. Cabrera 2-4 HR(12), 3 RBI
  • C. Rodriguez 1-4 HR(7), 2 RBI, K
  • J. Bennett 1IP 1H 0R 0BB 1K

Nothing too exciting going on here really. Willie Cabrera has been an interesting player this season. He has shown some decent power and doesn't strike out a ton (conversely he doesn't walk a ton either) and all in all has been one of the better and more consistent hitters on this team. In fact he has steadily improved since the beginning of the season posting OPSs of .577 (April), .768 (May), .904 (June), and .978 (July). Its amazing that, statistically speaking, Gorkys Hernandez has been the worst OF on this team (I'm not really counting Concepcion Rodriguez).

Augusta 0, Rome 3

  • J. Heyward 1-4 2B, K
  • F. Freeman 2-3 HR(17), 2 RBI
  • E. Osuna 7IP 4H 0R 1BB 4K

Well Freddie Freeman is most likely going to hit 20+ homers in his first season above complext ball. Jason Heyward will probably get 10+ and the two of them may be one of the most dynamic duos in the minors. I wouldn't be surprised if their slumping (especially Heyward) could be contributed to pitchers just not wanting to throw to them since there is no one else in this lineup who is scary.

Johnson City 5, Danville 4

  • G. Rodriguez 1-4 2B, RBI, BB, K
  • D. Francis 5IP 5H 2R 3BB 3K

I think David Francis should get his arm checked because he only struck out 3 and actually allowed some men on base. I mean seriously David, were you throwing lefty this game to give the hitters a chance? Must be.
