Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/09

I just want to sound off on the draft real quick. I really wanted White or Green at 7 (I knew we wouldn't get Matzek so no point in putting false hopes there) but I am a little disappointed that we spent our highest draft pick in nearly 20 years on a signability guy. I trust the front office and I know attendance is down right now, but we all know minor doesn't have the upside of the next 10 guys behind him.

Columbus 6, Gwinnett 5 - 11 Innings

  • B. Canizares 2-4 RBI, BB
  • B. Jones 2-4 BB, K
  • J. Reyes 0.0IP 1H 1R 0BB 0K

JoJo Reyes left this game after one batter in what appears to be a reaggrivation of his right hamstring. I guess we won't be seeing him back in Atlanta for a while. I don't know that he will be back even when he gets healthy. Barbaro keeps hitting the ball with a .385 AVG in his last 10 games and a .945 OPS on the season. What should we do with him?

Mississippi 2, Mobile 1

  • T. Jones 1-3 BB, K, SB(11)
  • E. Osuna 7IP 4H 1R 4BB 2K

Another really nice start for Edgar Osuna for Mississippi. He has only given up 5 hits in his 14 innings of work there. He has allowed 6 BB so far though that is probably a bit of an aberation as he doesn't normally walk a ton of guys. For those that don't know Osuna is the typical crafty lefty with a fastball that doesn't normally sniff at 90 MPH but he has a nice curve and a sexy changeup and excellent command of all three pitches. He may not make the Show as a starter, but don't be surprised to see him in Atlanta in the next couple of years.

Kinston 3, Myrtle Beach 2

  • F. Freeman 2-5 2B, K
  • M. Fisher 2-4 HR(1), 2 RBI, BB, 2K, CS(3)
  • J. Thompson 6.2IP 5H 2R 2BB 1K

Cody Johnson walked 2 more times and but also struck out twice. He actually has more walks than strike outs this month though. His power is a little off though only slugging .300 so far. Freddie Freeman is quietly putting together a solid season in Myrtle Beach this year. He hasn't homered since April but he got on base at a .440 clip last month and has kept his strike outs under control and is hitting over .360 RISP. If he can get Heyward back in the lineup protecting him maybe he will get some pitches to drive out of the park.

Rome 4, Savannah 3

  • G. Rodriguez 1-3 HR(10), BB, K
  • B. Schlehuber 3-4 2 2B
  • C. Culver 2-4 2B, RBI
  • C. Kimbrel 1.1IP 1H 0R 1BB 2K

Craig Kimbrel now has a 30/4 K/BB in 15 innings in Rome. Read that again just to make sure you got it all. I think it is time for him to go back to the Beach. He doesn't really have anything else to prove here. Don't look now but Braeden Schlehuber might be starting to bust out a little. In 9 games so far this month he has posted a .986 OPS. His season stats still don't look great on the whole, but he has really turned it on in the past couple of weeks. This Rome team has received some serious offense out of its catcher position so far this year with Jesus Sucre hitting .324 so far and Schlehuber starting to mash.
