Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/13

Not a good night for any Braves team.

Scranton WB 7, Gwinnett 6

  • R. Gorecki 1-5 2B, 2K
  • B. Barton 1-3 2B, BB, K
  • J. Venters 4IP 5H 6R 3BB 5K

Jonny Venters got knocked around pretty well in his first start in AAA and his defense didn't back him up very well committing 3 errors (2 in the OF?!?). Casey Kotchman did play in this one also collecting 2 RBI and a walk but he didn't have a hit in his one official AB. Outside of a couple of sac flies there wasn't a whole lot of offense for the Braves in this one. Our recent FA signing, Jon Huber, did pitch 2 perfect innings with 3 strike outs. I would guess he is just here for organizational depth.

Birmingham 5, Mississippi 3

  • M. Young 2-5, K
  • W. Cabrera 3-4 RBI, K
  • G. Creek 4-4 2B, RBI

Those three guys collected all but 2 of the hits for Mississippi in this game. The Braves didn't take any walks in this game which didn't really help any. On the pitching side Kyle Cofield had a quality start going 6 innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Cofield has been pretty solid so far this season in Mississippi but he has allowed 43 walks in 64.2IP versus only 43 K. His hits allowed are solid, but that walk rate is a little worrisome. He doesn't do anything especially great but he gets it done, we will have to see how he finishes the season and see if those walks catch up with him.

Myrtle Beach 4, Salem 6

  • F. Freemna 1-3 2B, BB, 2K
  • R. Gress 1-4 HR(1), 2RBI, 3K
  • C. Rohrbough 7IP 5H 4R 1BB 2K

Randy Gress just gets it done with the bat. I heard from someone who was at the game that the ball was actually smoking as it went over the fence and that Gress had announced to the crowd beforehand that he was going to hit it out. He is just an amazing player. Cole Rohrbough needs to get back on track. He wasn't really horrible (like the game in which he gave up 10 runs) but just kind of mediocre. Right now he is our highest rated remaining pitching prospect so I'd like to see him get back on track.

Charleston 14, Rome 6

  • J. Santamaria 2-4 3B, RBI, BB
  • J. Sucre 2-4 RBI, 2K
  • JJ Hoover 5IP 8H 2R 1BB 9K

Jahdiel Santamaria is currently on a 9 game hitting streak and is hitting .333 for the month. He is another guy we picked up from the Yankees and he doesn't have much power and doesn't harness his speed very well yet, but he could be useful down the line if the stars align. I think J.J. Hoover is becoming my new favorite pitching prospect. he has a 63/7 K/BB this season through 56.2 innings. If he can get the homers under control (7 in those 56 innings) then he could be something nice. He has a similar profile to Tommy Hanson in that he has command of 4 different pitches and currently sits in the low 90s with his fastball.
