Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/7

Gwinnett 2, Toledo 3

  • R. Gorecki 1-3 BB
  • B. Barton 2-4 2B, RBI, K
  • J. Reyes 5IP 5H 1R 4BB 4K

Despite poor peripherals JoJo Reyes only allowed the one earned run in his start. He hasn't been bad for Gwinnett so far this season and I always forget we have him to fall back on in case of emergencies, but if things keep up the way they are now how many different starters will the Braves have used by the end of the year? 6? 7? That is a huge improvement considering we probably used more than that before the end of May last year.

Mississippi 8, Huntsville 4

  • B. Hicks 2-6 HR(5), 2K
  • J. Heyward 2-3 2B, HR(5), 2BB, K
  • W. Cabrera 3-5 2 2B, 3 RBI

Jason Heyward has only two biceps. But they are very large. But for a second I want to turn attention to another OF for the Braves. Willie Cabrera has recently pushed his season OPS over .700, which normally isn't huge. But taking into account the tough offensive environment of the Southern League and his horrendous start (.618 April OPS;.508 OPS in May) he has really turned it around the past couple of months and his August is looking just as good so far.

Lynchburg 7, Myrtle Beach 1

  • C. Shehan 3-4 K
  • B. Johnson 2-3 RBI, BB, K

A smattering of relievers for the Pelicans pitched in this game but were ultimately sabotaged by poor defense by the Braves infield. Mostly Brandon Beachy was sabotaged as he gave up 5 runs, but only 1 of them was earned. Four errors on the infield will do that to you.

Savannah 0, Rome 2

  • A. Milligan 2-4 RBI, K
  • O. Infante 1-3 BB, SB
  • R. Delgado 7IP 0H 0R 1BB 9K

Yeah Randall Delgado was dealing in this one. If you didn't notice up there, that is ZERO hits allowed. In his last 26 innings he has allowed only 4 runs while striking out 31 and walking only 3. Very impressive for a guy that walked 7 in a game just a month ago. I wonder if they found something mechanically he was doing wrong. Either way, I am pumped. Also take note of Omar Infante on the comeback trail.

Pulaski 0, Danville 3

  • LV Ware 2-4 RBI, K
  • C. Harrilchak 1-3 2 RBI, BB, K
  • C. Masters 7IP 4H 0R 0BB 9K

Masters keep on dealing. His ERA is a cool 1.93 and he has a 56/4 K/BB in 46 innings so far this season. I guess that is good. Or something.

GCL Yankees 8, GCL Braves 15

  • L. Hiller 4-5 3 2B, 8 RBI, K
  • D. Falcon 3-4 2 HR(2), 4 RBI, BB
  • J. Dalfonso 2-3 RBI

Layton Hiller may have just put up the best offensive game by a Braves minor leaguer this season. What is crazy is that it was almost topped in the same game by his teammate Daniel Falcon. But you have to give credit to the guy who was getting hits when men were on base.
