Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/21

Today was a slow one in the world of Braves baseball but we did see the opening day for another Braves team in GCL which has me pretty excited. There are some interesting prospects on the team that I actually know more about than normal this season and if the info we have is true Edward Salcedo will be joining them soon as well (though I am honestly not sure what team he will join when he comes stateside).

Buffalo 2, Gwinnett 7

  • M. Young 2-4 .280 Avg
  • F. Freeman 2-4 2B, 2 RBI, .269 Avg
  • T. Gustafson 6IP 5H 1R 4BB 2K 4.92 ERA

Tim Gustafson earned his 7th win of the season which just goes to show that the best pitcher doesn't always win. Gustafson has been one of the more mercurial pitchers in the Braves system this season, but he is getting better results than his performance would indicate. He hasn't pitched longer than 6 inning in any outing this season and has allowed 67 hits in 60 innings of work along with 37 walks. Don't get me wrong, his ERA and his FIP were both over 5 coming into this game tonight but he continues to collect wins. Derek Lowe would be proud if he wasn't busy being a good pitcher lately.

Mississippi - Off

Myrtle Beach - All Star Break

This one is actually being held in Myrtle Beach tomorrow. JJ Hoover, Randall Delgado and Julio Teheran will be representing the Pelicans in the game.

Rome - All Star Break

This one will be held in a familiar place for Braves fans in Greenville, SC. I believe Cory Rasmus will be the only Brave in this one with Myke Jones, Arodys Vizcaino and Teheran all having been promoted.

Danville

Opening day will be tomorrow.

GCL Tigers 2, GCL Braves 8

  • M. Lipka 2-5 2B, RBI
  • E. Reyes 2-4 3 RBI, BB
  • RSF 2-3 2B, RBI
  • E. Sanchez 1-1 BB
  • L. De Luna 3IP 4H 1R 0BB 3K

I will be honest up front I don't know a lot about many of the guys on the GCL roster. That said, there are several things to be excited about in this game. Matt Lipka had a very successful professional debut and I can't wait to see more of him. RSF is on the comeback trail and hopefully can make a return to form with Rome soon enough. I don't know who remembers him from the DSL last year but Edison Sanchez was the Braves DSL Hitter of the Year last season after putting up some pretty impressive power/patience numbers in the DSL. He played mostly 3B last season but subbed in at 1B for RSF in today's game. He is just 19 years old but is easily one of the guys I am most excited to follow this summer.

DSL Braves - Off
