Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/7

Scranton 2, Gwinnett 4

  • J. Schafer 1-4 2K, .218 Avg
  • F. Freeman 1-4 2B, .262 Avg
  • J. Thurston 3-4 2B, 2 RBI, .241 Avg
  • T. Redmond 6IP 9H 1R 1BB 5K 4.15 ERA

Todd Redmond scattered base runners all over the place in this one, but good defense and little luck bailed him out and he exited mostly unscathed. Joe Thurston was most of the offense for the Braves with a little help from some other well placed hits. Mike Dunn also came in for a scoreless 9th inning earning his 4th save of the season. WHEN WILL HE BE CALLED UP?!?!

Mississippi 1, West Tennessee 4

  • O Mercado 2-4 2K, .280 Avg
  • R. Sullivan 5IP 5H 3R 1BB 3K 6.14 ERA

Richard Sullivan actually had a decent start (well he did hit 3 batters but only 1 run was earned) but the Braves were up against Michael Pineda, one of the hottest young pitchers in the minors right now and then he was followed by Josh Fields, a former wasted draft pick of the Braves, both of whom just shut the Mississippi offense down. Admittedly that isn't very difficult.

Winston-Salem 3, Myrtle Beach 4

  • D. Nelson 1-3 2B, BB, K, .250 Avg
  • M. Jones 1-4 2B, RBI, .262 Avg
  • J. Sucre 1-4 2B, 2 RBI, K, .210 Avg
  • LV Ware 3-4 RBI, .263 Avg

A good win for Myrtle Beach that saw them get contributions from just about everyone. Brett Oberholtzer pitched solidly and handed the ball over to the bullpen who allowed a few base runners but struck out 7 men in 4 innings of work to close it out. LV Ware delivered a walk off hit in the bottom of the 9th that scored Matt Kennelly from 2B. Ironically in the Pelican's last home game Michael Jones drove Ware in for a walk off win.

Rome 4, Charleston 3

  • C. Harrilchak 3-4 RBI, BB, 2 SB(12), .298 Avg
  • R. Hefflinger 2-5 2 RBI, .265 Avg
  • C. Bethancourt 2-4 2B, .241 Avg
  • A. Vizcaino 5IP 3H 0R 0BB 7K 2.34 ERA

I feel like we have a dominant pitching performance every night out with our minor leaguers and tonight wasn't any different with Arodys Vizcaino shutting down the RiverDogs for 5 innings. I don't know what his pitch count was so I'm not 100% on why he was pulled then but the Braves are careful with their young arms. He still hasn't walked a batter in over 40 innings which is just mind blowing for a guy who is just 19 with a 95 MPH speed pitch. Another note on Vizcaino: he is the rare minor league pitcher that has had a decision in every start so far this season. He is 9-3 in 12 starts. Very impressive indeed. Also I am super excited to see Cory Harrilchak stealing bases effectively again and getting hits in bunches. Finally Myke Jones saw his 9 game hitting streak come to an end.

DSL Braves 4, DSL Tigers 2

  • R. Luna 3-5 2 RBI, .462 Avg
  • E. Salcedo 2-3 2 BB, SB(3), .294 Avg
  • C. Franco 2-5 2B, K, .238 Avg

Edward Salcedo may have been shaking off some rust but I have to admit I am really impressed by his ability to take a walk with 8 in 6 games so far. That could just be a byproduct of his being way more advanced than the rest of the league, a la Jason Heyward when he was in HS, but either way I like it a lot. All these other guys I have no clue about. Luna up there is actually 28 years old so don't get too excited about him.
