Pitching was the theme of the day in the Braves' minor league system tonight, as all 3 teams that played saw great work from their starters. Todd Redmond struck out ten men, Zeke Spruill pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, and David Filak threw five innings of one-hit ball.

Gwinnett Braves 1, Charlotte Knights 3

  • Drew Sutton, 2B: 1-4, 2B, .259
  • Christian Marrero, LF: 1-3, 2B, .310
  • Todd Redmond, SP: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 10 K, L(1-2), 2.61 ERA
  • Jaye Chapman, RP: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1.80 ERA
  • Anthony Varvaro, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 0.00 ERA
Gwinnett's offense was not in sync tonight, as the G-Braves managed just 3 hits all night against the Charlotte Knights. Marrerro and Sutton each had a double, Jordan Parraz chipped in a single, and that was it. Joe Terdoslavich did walk twice tonight, the only Brave to reach base more than once. Todd Redmond had the strikeout pitch working tonight, as he sat down 10 Knights by way of the K. Unfortunately, he was a bit too hittable, and gave up three runs. In his last 4 starts, spanning 20.2 innings, Redmond has put up an impressive 27/6 K/BB ratio. During that time he's given up 14 hits, leaving his WHIP sitting pretty at a hair under 1. Chapman and Varvaro relieved Redmond, and each threw scoreless frames.

Erik Cordier gets the nod tomorrow as the G-Braves finish off their series with the Knights.

Mississippi Braves 1, Birmingham Barons 0

  • Joe Leonard, 3B: 1-4, R, .258
  • Mathew Kennelly, DH: 1-3, RBI, .208
  • Zeke Spruill, SP: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, W(2-1), 3.38 ERA
  • Cory Rasmus, RP: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, H(1), 1.04 ERA
  • Mark Lamm, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, S(2), 1.04 ERA
Mississippi also had trouble getting their offense going tonight, only mustering 5 hits against the Barons. Fortunately, thanks to Joe Leonard and Mathew Kennelly, they were able to scrape a run together, and one run was all Zeke Spruill and the Mississippi pen would need. Spruill was absolutely stellar tonight, allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks over 7 dominant innings, striking out 3 and picking up his 2nd win of the season. Spruill, who started the season with 2 excellent starts, rebounded from an awful showing his last turn, and looks to be just fine. Ryan Buchter, Cory Rasmus, and Mark Lamm polished off Spruill's gem, shutting down the Barons over the final 2 innings.

Sean Gilmartin toes the slab for Mississippi tomorrow, looking to pick up his first win of the year.

Rome Braves 6, Asheville Tourists 5
  • Kyle Kubitza, 3B: 2-5, 2B, R, RBI, .309
  • Tony Mueller, CF: 2-5, R, SB(3), .214
  • Brandon Drury, 1B: 2-5, 2B, R, .167
  • Logan Robbins, 2B: 1-4, 2B, 2 R, RBI, BB, E(3), .115
  • David Filak, SP: 6 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 5 K, W(1-1), 2.14 ERA
  • Cole Rohrbough, RP: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 0.00 ERA
Finally, some offense! Rome scored early and often tonight in a balanced effort from the bats. Kyle Kubitza kept up his good work, going 2 for 5 with a double, RBI, and a run. Tony Mueller, the R-Braves leadoff hitter and center fielder went 2 for 5 as well, scoring a run and stealing his third base of the year. Brandon Drury recorded only his 3rd multi-hit game of the year, and all have come in the last 6 games. Perhaps that's a sign that he may be breaking out of his early season funk. David Filak followed up his 11 strikeout game by throwing 6 innings of 1-hit, 1-run ball. He stuck out 5 and the only negative from his start today was how wild he was, walking 5 men. Regardless, a great start for Filak. Our old pal Cole Rohrbough continues his comeback tour with fine work out of the Rome pen.

Navery Moore will get the start against Asheville tomorrow.
