Terdoslavich Doubles The G-Braves To Victory, The Hillcats Show Their Power, And Spruill And Filak Get Off To Great Starts In Friday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

After a rough 2011, David Filak got his 2012 off to a great start, striking out 7 and allowing just 1 run over 6 innings, though he was saddled with a loss.
After a rough 2011, David Filak got his 2012 off to a great start, striking out 7 and allowing just 1 run over 6 innings, though he was saddled with a loss.

Joey Terdoslavich doubled Gwinnett to an extra inning victory, Lynchburg got a lot of offense out of its middle infield and the bottom of its order, and Zeke Spruill and David Filak got their seasons off on the right foot.

Gwinnett Braves 3, Durham Bulls 0, 11 innings

  • Jordan Parraz RF 2-4, BB, .333 AVG
  • Joey Terdoslavich 1-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, .111 AVG
  • Erik Cordier 4.2 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 1 K, 0.00 ERA
  • Buddy Carlyle 2.2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K, 0.00 ERA
  • Adam Russell 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 5 K, W (1), 0.00 ERA

The G-Braves and the Bulls are working on being the most generous teams in the minors, giving out free baseball each of the first two games of the year. Unsurprisingly, Joey Terdoslavich's first AAA hit was a double, an 11th inning drive that would lead to the Braves' victory. The pitching staff was a little wild, walking 9, but they also struck out 10 over 11 shutout innings. Erik Cordier had a good start, keeping the Bulls scoreless over 4.2 innings. He left with the bases loaded, but veteran Buddy Carlyle stranded his runners. Adam Russell, who's really tall, struck out 5 over 2 innings, picking up the win.

Julio Teheran, the 2011 International League Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year, will make his 2012 debut tomorrow night against Durham.

Mississippi Braves 1, Mobile Bay Bears 4

  • Myke Jones CF 2-4, .222 AVG
  • Phil Gosselin 2B 2-3, 2B, BB, .286 AVG
  • Joe Leonard 3B 2-4, 2B, RBI, .375 AVG
  • Todd Cunningham RF 2-4, .375 AVG
  • Zeke Spruill 5 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 8 K, 1.80 ERA

Zeke Spruill's season debut was a great one, as he struck out 8 over 5 innings, allowing just 1 run. He was good in AA last year, with a 3.20 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP in 45 innings over 7 starts, so if he gets off to a hot start this season he could move up to Gwinnett quickly. The first 3 hitters in the lineup, Myke Jones, Phil Gosselin, and Joe Leonard, combined to go 6-11 with a walk, accounting for the lone M-Braves run as Leonard drove Gosselin in with a 4th inning double.

Sean Gilmartin, the Braves first round selection in the 2011 draft, will make his AA debut Saturday against Mobile.

Lynchburg Hillcats 9, Potomac Nationals 3

  • Nick Ahmed SS 2-5, 2B, 3B, .400 AVG
  • Tommy La Stella 2-3, BB, 3 RBI, .667 AVG
  • Robby Hefflinger LF 2-3, 2B, HR (1), 2 RBI, BB, .667 AVG
  • Braeden Schlehuber C 3-4, 2B, HR (1), 3 RBI, .750 AVG
  • Gus Schlosser 8 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 4 K, W (1), 2.25 ERA

The Hillcats won their opener, getting the bulk of their offense out of the bottom of the order, with 8th and 9th place hitters Robby Hefflinger and Braeden Schlehuber combining to go 5-7 with 2 doubles, 2 homers, a walk, and 5 RBI. The Cats' middle infield was also productive, as Nick Amed and Tommy La Stella, both beginning their first full season in pro ball, combined to go 4-8 with a double, a walk, and 3 RBI. Gus Schlosser was a dominant reliever for Rome last season, with a 1.56 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP in 29.2 innings, but he's moving into the rotation this year and got things off to a fantastic start, allowing 2 runs over 8 innings, picking up the win.

Lefty Ronan Pacheco will get the start against the P-Nats tomorrow night.

Rome Braves 0, Charelston River Dogs 0

  • William Beckwith 1B 1-3, E (1), .333 AVG
  • David Filak 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 7 K, 1.50 ERA
  • Jean Carlos Gil 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 K, 0.00

Rome only had one hit in this one, a William Beckwith 5th inning single, ruining a great pitching performance by David Filak, who struck out 7 and allowed just 1 run over 6 innings. Filak started 2011 with Rome, but was demoted to Rome after putting up a 7.54 ERA and a 1.96 WHIP in 45.1 innings. Jean Carlos Gil was solid in relief of Filak, striking out 4 over 2 scoreless innings.

Tim Hudson will make his first rehab start tomorrow night in Charleston for the R-Braves.
