Wiley Has A Perfect Day At The Plate, Simmons Has A Three Hit Day, And Cornely Is Stellar In Relief In Saturday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

It was a rough day for Atlanta's minor league affiliates, as all four teams took losses, completing the dreaded reverse organizational sweep. Wiley and Simmons caused havoc at the top of Mississippi's lineup while Cornley was unconscious in relief.

Gwinnett Braves 4, Rochester Red Wings 6

  • Jose Constanza, LF: 1-4, 3B, 2 RBI, R, .316
  • Ernesto Mejia, 1B: 1-4, 3B, R, .301
  • Felix Pie, RF: 1-3, RBI, .143
  • Eric Junge, SP: 6 IP, 12 H, 6 R (5 ER), 2 BB, 3 K, 3.64 ERA
  • Adam Russell, RP: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 2.37 ERA
Eric Junge was light up by the Rochester Red Wings tonight, giving up a whopping 12 hits and 2 walks over 6 innings. He allowed 6 runs, though one was let in on an error. Gwinnett was only able to manage one run until the 9th inning, when they strung together some hits off of Rochester's mop up man, including a 2 run triple by Jose Constanza. Ernesto Mejia, Gwinnett's big first baseman, even got in on the fun with a triple himself. Felix Pie picked up his first Gwinnett RBI, but is still only hitting .143.

Todd Redmond takes the mound for Gwinnett tomorrow.

Tennessee Smokies 3, Mississippi Braves 2

  • Keenan Wiley, CF: 4-4, 2B, R, BB, SB(6), .373
  • Andrelton Simmons, SS: 3-5, R, SB(9), .296
  • Tim Smith, LF: 1-3, 2 RBI, 2 BB, .333
  • Evan Gattis, C: 0-5, .274
  • Jose Lugo, SP: 5.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 3.49
  • Chris Masters, RP: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 3.86 ERA
Keenan Wiley and Andrelton Simmons were a two man wrecking crew tonight, but no one behind them could get a hit, and Mississippi fell by a run. Wiley had a perfect day at the plate, with a walk, three singles, and a double in 5 plate appearances. Simmons also had three hits, and both he and Wiley swipped a base on the afternoon. Evan Gattis took an 0-5 on the afternoon, but that's to be expected as he adjusts to a higher level. He's still batting a very respectable .274. Jose Lugo had a decent start, allowing 3 runs over 5.2 innings, striking out 5 in the process. The Mississippi pen was solid as usual, throwing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Sean Gilmartin takes the ball for Mississippi tomorrow, looking for his 2nd win in a row.

Lynchburg Hillcats 2, Winston-Salem Dash 8
  • Adam Milligan, DH: 1-4, 2 RBI, .167
  • Braeden Schlehuber, C: 1-2, 2B, R, .286
  • Tommy La Stella, 2B: 1-3, BB, .302
  • Cody Martin, SP: 5.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R (4 ER), 2 BB, 6 K, 3.28 ERA
It was a rough night for Lynchburg in Winston-Salem, as Cody Martin and the bullpen got rocked while the offense only mustered 4 hits all night long. Martin lasted 5.1 innings and allowed 5 runs (only 4 earned). Martin actually struck out 6 men - a good number - but was beset with a bit of bad luck sporting a strand rate of under 50%. Adam Milligan accounted for all of the Lynchburg scoring with a 2 RBI single and Tommy La Stella reached base twice again. Other than that there wasn't much else going on for Lynchburg tonight.

Gus Schlosser goes tomorrow as the Hillcats look to take one from the Dash.

Rome Braves 6, Charleston RiverDogs 7
  • Sergio Miranda, 2B: 2-4, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, .182
  • Ryan Query, C: 3-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R, .400
  • William Beckwith, 1B: 1-4, HR(1), 2 RBI, .298
  • Rafael Briceno, SP: 4 IP, 4 H, 5 R (4 ER), 2 BB, 3 K, 6.48 ERA
  • John Cornely, RP: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K, 3.86 ERA
Rafael Briceno wasn't on top of his game tonight, but, like Martin, was bitten by a bit of bad luck, as 5 of his 6 baserunners scored on him in his 4 innings of work. He also struck out three. But that pales in comparison to what John Cornely did in relief of him. Cornely put up the best line of a Braves' reliever this year, going 2.1 perfect innings and punching out all 7 men he faced. On the offensive side of things, Segio Miranda went 2-4 with a pair of RBI doubles and a walk. Ryan Query had himself a 3 hit, 2 RBI game, and William Beckwith hit his first homer of the year, a 2 run shot.

David Filak looks to get Rome back on track tomorrow.
