With a 10 game hitting streak going, Ernesto Mejia is all smiles.
With a 10 game hitting streak going, Ernesto Mejia is all smiles.

Ernesto Mejia extended his hitting streak to 10 games in a losing effort as Jair Jurrjens got knocked around, while Todd Cunningham and Joe Leonard each reached base 3 times in a Mississippi win.

Gwinnett Braves 1, Rochester Red Wings 10

  • Ernesto Mejia 1B 1-4, HR (7), RBI, .305 AVG
  • Jair Jurrjens 4.1 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 11 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 6.10 ERA
  • Buddy Carlyle 1.2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 1 K, 1.66 ERA

Jair Jurrjens had another poor start for Gwinnett, allowing 7 runs, 6 earned, without making it out of the fifth inning. After posting a 2.05 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in 22 innings over his first 3 starts for Gwinnett, he's allowed a 16.00 ERA and a 2.78 WHIP in just 9 innings over his last 2 starts. The only real positive to take away from today's game is that he only allowed 1 walk. Buddy Carlyle had another nice appearance, tossing 1.2 shutout innings. He's been great overall this year, with a 1.66 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP in 21.2 innings over 9 relief appearances. Gwinnett's lone run came from Ernesto Mejia's seventh homer of the year. Mejia now has a 10 game hitting streak going, that's seen him hit .444 with a 1.348 OPS, 4 doubles, a triple, 3 homers, and 12 RBI.

Julio Teheran will start the series finale tomorrow morning at 11:05 AM.

Mississippi Braves 8, Tennessee Smokies 5

  • Todd Cunningham CF 2-4, 2 RBI, BB, SB (6), .328 AVG
  • Joe Leonard 3B 1-2, RBI, 2 BB, .255 AVG
  • Matt Kennelly 1B 2-4, .235 AVG
  • Alden Carrithers LF-3B 2-4, .286 AVG
  • David Hale 5 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 3 K, 4.35 ERA
  • Luis Avilan 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 K, W (1), 2.59 ERA

Todd Cunningham had another great game, as the leadoff hitter reached base 3 times, drove in a pair of runs, and stole his sixth base of the year. The 23 year old is having an excellent May, hitting .383 with a .431 OBP, a .931 OPS, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 9 RBI, and 5 steals. Joe Leonard also reached base 3 times, drawing a pair of walks and singling, extending his hitting streak to 5 games. During that span, he's gone 6-16 with 2 doubles, 4 RBI, and 4 walks. After going 2 for his last 13, Matt Kennelly was 2-4 today. David Hale continues to be inconsistent, following up 6 shutout innings in his last start by allowing 4 earned runs in just 5 innings today. Oddly enough, right handed hitters have been the most trouble for the righthander this season, hitting .253 against him while southpaws have hit just .174. Luis Avilan picked up the win in relief, tossing 3 shutout innings. Since moving to the bullpen after returning from a stint on the disable list, the 22 year old lefty has struck out 12 over 8.2 scoreless innings.

The M-Braves are off tomorrow, then travel to Pensacola Wednesday to take on the Blue Wahoos, with Zeke Spruill scheduled to start the series opener.

Lynchburg Hillcats - Off

Tomorrow the Hillcats will make everyone's favorite road trip and head down to Myrtle Beach, where Dimasther Delgado will take on the Pelicans in the series opener.

Rome Braves - Postponed, Rain

Rain will force the R-Braves to play a doubleheader on Tuesday, with the bright and early start time of 10:35 AM. Navery Moore is scheduled to start the first game, but the team hasn't named a probably starter for the second game.
