Simmons Slugs His Way To The Top Of The Atlanta Braves Minor League Hot Sheet

Andrelton Simmons showed as much power this week as he has in his entire career.
Andrelton Simmons showed as much power this week as he has in his entire career.

Andrelton Simmons doubled his career home run total this week, Nick Ahmed had a career high 5 hit game, and William Beckwith and Ian Gac slugged their way to the hot sheet. Joey Terdoslavich's offensive and defensive struggles continued, Tommy La Stella had a rare down week, and Ryan Weber and David Filak each had a rough time for Rome.

Who's Hot?

Andrelton Simmons SS, Mississippi Braves - 10-24, 3 2B, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 4 BB - In the first 900 at bats of his career, Simmons hit 3 home runs, but he must love playing in Pensacola because he hit 3 homers this week in 20 at bats during a 5 game series against the Blue Wahoos. The first game of the series was the highlight of his week, as he went 4-4 with 2 doubles, a homer, and 2 RBI. His slash line for the week was an unreal .417/.500/.917/1.417, and he raised his season average from .286 to .305 and his OPS from .712 to .819.

William Beckwith 1B, Rome Braves - 9-26, 2 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI, BB - Beckwith showed off his power stroke this week, with 5 of his 9 hits going for extra bases, propelling him to a .769 OPS for the week. Since returning to the team from Extended Spring Training, the 21 year old has hit .300 with a 1.024 OPS, 3 doubles, 4 homers, and 11 RBI in 40 at bats over 12 games.

Nick Ahmed SS, Lynchburg Hillcats - 10-27, 2 2B, 4 RBI, BB, 5 R, 5 SB - Ahmed had a career day on Friday, going 5-6 with 2 doubles and a RBI. For the week he hit .370 with a .837 OPS and his 5 stolen bases gave him a Carolina League leading 18 steals for the season. He's second in the league in at bats with 178 and runs scored with 36.

Ian Gac 1B, Mississippi Braves - 7-17, 5 2B, 3 RBI, 5 BB, 7 K - Gac had been struggling in May, hitting just .196 in 56 at bats, but he turned things around this week, putting up a .412/.545/.706/1.251 slash line. Strikeouts remain a problem for the 26 year old slugger, as he struck out in 41% of his at bats this week, and has fanned in 38% of his at bats on the year.

Honorable Mention: Ernesto Mejia, Cory Gearrin, Todd Redmond, Julio Teheran, Gwinnett Braves; Luis Avilan, Zeke Spruill, Alden Carrithers, Joe Leonard, Cory Harrilchak, Mississippi Braves; JR Graham, Gus Schlosser, Robby Hefflinger, Dimasther Delgado, Chris Garcia, Myke Jones, Adam Milligan, Lynchburg Hillcats; Navery Moore, Greg Ross, Kyle Kubitza, Elmer Reyes, Will Skinner, Rome Braves

Joey Terdoslavich 3B, Gwinnett Braves - 2-20 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 5 K - Friday night, Terdoslavich went 2-5 with a homer and 3 RBI, but for the rest of the week he was 0-15. The week was an extension of a horrible May that's seen him hit .146 with a .406 OPS. For the season he has a .186 average and a .529 OPS, and has struck out in 27% of his at bats. He also made 6 errors this week, giving him 22 in 44 games at third base this season.

Ryan Weber RHP, Rome Braves - 0-1, 2 GS, 6.1 IP, 11 ER, 14 H, 0 BB, 3 K - Weber's first start of the week was pretty good, as he allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, over 3 innings, but his second start was awful, as he allowed 10 earned runs in just 2.1 innings. Before this week, he had only allowed 6 earned runs in 23.2 innings this season between Rome and Lynchburg. The lone bright side for him was that he didn't walk anyone in either start, and has only allowed 3 walks in 30 innings this season.

Tommy La Stella 2B, Lynchburg Hillcats -4-22, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 5 K - La Stella had a tough week, hitting just .182 with a .432 OPS, but the 23 year old is still having a nice season, hitting .288 with a .832 OPS, 10 doubles, 4 homers, 31 RBI, and 8 steals in 153 at bats.

David Filak RHP, Rome Braves -0-1, 1 GS, 5 IP, 9 ER, 10 H, 2 BB, 7 K - Filak had a rough time in his lone start this week, allowing 9 earned runs in 5 innings after only allowing 11 earned runs in 47.2 innings over his first 9 starts of the season. The game ballooned his season ERA from 2.08 to 3.42 and his WHIP from 1.10 to 1.33.

Dishonorable Mention: Cory RasmusKeenan Wiley, Todd Cunningham, Mississippi Braves; Cody Martin, Edward Salcedo, Lynchburg Hillcats; Rafael Briceno, Ryne Harper, Jakob Dalfonso, Fernando de los Santos, Brandon Drury, Rome Braves
