Through 23 innings of this series, it seemed as if Atlanta was about to cruise to a series sweep over the Jays. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, so two out of three will have to do. Notes:
Jason Heyward had a great series, even though he only played in two of the games. In game one, Heyward had two hits, including beating out a throw in the tenth at first. His steal of third caused the errant throw that won Atlanta the game. In game two, Heyward contributed with the glove, making an incredible diving catch in right center field.
Michael Bourn stayed hot, racking up eight hits during the series, including four doubles.
Toronto's offense came in with a reputation of hitting for power, and that certainly showed during the series. Jose Bautista launched two homers, while Brett Lawrie and Colby Rasmus hit one out each.
Julio Teheran made his 2012 debut in a spot start on Sunday, and gave Braves' fans reasons to be optimistic. He command his fastball well, and did a good job mixing his pitches. Even though the final line was rough, Teheran took a step forward in his development.
Dan Uggla's walk rate this season is at a career high, and his game on Friday certainly helped out a little bit. Uggla earned four walks on the night, and has 41 on the season. His season high for walks is 92, back in 2009.
Andrelton Simmons has made a quick impact on the team with his defense, but on Saturday, his bat is what earned him some applause. Simmons hit the first home of his major league career into the left field stands, and the silent treatment in the dugout that followed was well done. Congrats to Simmons.
Colby Rasmus fell just a triple short of the cycle on Sunday as he helped Toronto blow the game open.
And finally, we end on Livan. Brought into Sunday's game with the bases loaded and a three-run lead, Hernandez surrendered seven hits and five runs, including two home runs, in 1.2 innings of work. Livan has a role on this team as a mop up guy, but that obviously wasn't how he was used on Sunday. I don't put any blame on him, he just didn't pitch well.
Also, Chipper Jones is finally back. That is always a good thing.
