Atlanta Braves vs. New York Yankees Series Recap

Mike Minor pitched great, but the bullpen failed him.

Well, this was certainly depressing. The Braves have lost four straight, making this the third time this year they've lost at least that many. At no other time during the season have the Braves lost more than two in a row. Not everything that happened was horrible, though.

Jason Heyward hit a couple of doubles Wednesday, bumping his average up to .250. Heyward's been coming around lately after a miserable May in which he hit just .200. His three hits in the series give him a .333 avg. for June. Of his 12 hits this month, six are for extra bases (four doubles, two HR).

Brian McCann had four hits in the series with a home run. He would've had two, but Nick Swisher was a meanie and robbed him of one in the first game of the series.

Michael Bourn extended his hitting streak to 13 games with four hits in the series. He's hitting .392 during the streak with 11 runs scored, but in this series, he left nine runners on base with six strikeouts.

Martin Prado also continued his good work, delivering four hits in the series. He's hitting .320 for the season and has hits in 16 of his last 20 games. His two-hit game Wednesday was his 26th multi-hit game of the year.

Randall Delgado only allowed three runs Monday, but walked six in five innings of work. Only one of the walks scored thanks to five strikeouts and seven groundouts.

Dan Uggla had just one hit in the series, but drew four walks. He's drawn 45 walks this year, second in the NL.

Tim Hudson struck out eight Wednesday and pitched good enough to get the win, but Atlanta's offense was, to put it mildly, awful. The team was 3-for-24 with RISP for the whole series: Matt Diaz's bases-loaded double in Tuesday's game and a pair of infield hits Wednesday. That's it. They only had one runner in scoring position on Monday because they only had five hits the whole game.

They definitely could've used those runs. Mike Minor was cruising along in his start Tuesday with a 4-0 lead when Fredi Gonzalez suddenly pulled him from the game for Jonny Venters. Now Venters had six scoreless outings prior to that game despite allowing a base runner in five of them, but he loaded the bases and grooved a sinker that didn't sink to Alex Rodriguez and it was hit for a grand slam. The slam tied Lou Gehrig for most slams in a career. Cory Gearrin, making his season debut in the series, was brought in and promptly served up a home run to Nick Swisher. Fredi would later admit putting Gearrin in that spot was a mistake.

Meanwhile, Chad Durbin threw 2.1 scoreless innings in the series. He's unscored on in his last 16 games and his ERA has dropped below 4.00 for the year (3.96). His ERA hasn't been that low since 2010.

The Braves will have a chance for payback next week in New York, but have an off day Thursday to prepare for a three-game series with Baltimore this weekend.
