Wood Shines In First Pro Start While Mejia And Terdoslavich Keep Raking In Monday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

Gwinnett Braves 6, Syracuse Chiefs 10

  • Ernesto Mejia, 1B: 2-5, 2B, HR(15), 2 R, .312
  • Felix Pie, RF: 2-3, 2 RBI, R, .293
  • Ruben Gotay, 3B: 2-3, BB, .173
  • Eric Junge, SP: 4 IP, 9 H, 8 R (6 ER), 3 BB, 4 K, 5.14 ERA
Eric Junge had another lackluster start for the G-Braves, and got no help from his defense as Gwinnett fell to Syracuse 10-6. Junge went only 4 innings, allowing 8 runs (though 2 were unearned) on 9 hits and 3 walks. He also managed to strike out 4. Ernesto Mejia powered Gwinnett's offense, going 2-5 with a double and a homer, his 15th of the year. Felix Pie and Ruben Gotay also notched multi-hit games in the affair as well, with Pie driving in a pair too.

Gwinnett plays the Yankees AAA affiliate tomorrow, though no probables have been announced as of yet.

Mississippi Braves 5, Birmingham Barons 9

  • Joey Terdoslavich, 3B: 2-4, 2 2B, R, BB, 2 E(4,5), .364
  • Todd Cunningham, CF: 2-4, 2 2B, 4 RBI, .323
  • Tim Smith, LF: 2-4, 2 R, RBI, .319
  • Phil Gosselin, 2B: 2-5, 2B, R, .261
  • Sean Gilmartin, SP: 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 3.48 ERA
  • Andrew Russell, RP: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 2.27 ERA
Sean Gilmartin was a bit too hittable today and was roughed up the Birmingham Barons. Gilmartin went 5 innings, allowing 8 hits and 5 runs, with the biggest blow coming on a two-run homer in the third. Some good news, however: Gilmartin did not walk a batter and still managed to strike out 4 . Gilmartin has done a great job of limiting walks lately, having allowed only 6 free passes in his last 24 innings. After an error-free day at third yesterday, Joey Terdoslavich started at the hot corner again today and committed a pair of late game errors. He made several plays very cleanly however, and, more importantly, his bat stayed red hot: Terdoslavich rapped out a pair of doubles and drew a walk as well. If he can keep hitting this well while continuing to learn third, he could play his way back into the Braves' plans. Todd Cunningham kept hitting as well, with a pair of doubles of his own. Tim Smith and Phil Gosselin each notched two-hit days as well.

Luis Avilan goes tomorrow as Mississippi opens a series with Chattanooga.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans 2, Lynchburg Hillcats 3
  • Adam Milligan, LF: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, .242
  • Myke Jones, CF: 2-5, 2B, 2 R, .254
  • Edward Salcedo, 3B: 1-3, BB, SB(9), .263
  • Chris Garcia, 1B: 2-4, .309
  • J.R. Graham, SP: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 2.60 ERA
  • Chasen Shreve, RP: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 1.45 ERA
J.R. Graham pitched another solid start, going 5 innings while allowing 2 runs on 6 hits. Graham didn't walk a batter, struck out 3, and got 8 groundball outs to one flyout. Chasen Shreve pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out 3 and lowering his ERA to 1.45. Adam Milligan had a two hit game including the game-winning RBI single in the 7th inning. Myke Jones had a two hit day with a double as well, and is slowly moving his average towards a respectable number. Edward Salcedo singled, walked, and stole his ninth base of the year as well.

Cody Martin toes the rubber for Lynchburg tomorrow.

Greenville Drive 2, Rome Braves 4
  • Ross Heffley, 2B: 2-4, R, .308
  • Kyle Kubitza, DH: 1-3, 3B, 2 RBI, .249
  • Tony Mueller, CF: 1-4, R, SB(16), .275
  • Alex Wood, SP: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 0.00 ERA
  • Ian Thomas, RP: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 3.57 ERA
Alex Wood, Atlanta's 2nd round pick in this year's draft, made his professional debut tonight, and although it was brief, it was stellar. Wood threw 2 innings, allowing only 2 hits while walking none and punching out 4 men. The bullpen preserved the good start, with Ian Thomas going 2.2 shutout innings with 4 strikeouts in relief. Ross Heffley turned in another 2 hit day as Rome's 2nd baseman, while Kyle Kubitza had the big blow, a 2 run triple in the first inning. Tony Mueller increased his steal count to 16, tops among Rome players.

Greg Ross goes for Rome tomorrow.

Kingsport Mets 2, Danville Braves 10
  • Carlos Franco, 3B: 2-3, R, 2 BB, .375
  • Felix Marte, CF: 2-4, 3B, RBI, 2 R, OF Assist, .471
  • Levi Hyams, 2B: 1-5, HR(3), 4 RBI, .200
  • Blake Brown, RF: 1-4, R, 2 RBI, 3 K, .185
  • Eduardo Castillo, SP: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 7.84 ERA
  • Jeremy Fitzgerald, RP: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 0.00 ERA
Danville put up a 10 spot in the 5th inning to roll over the Kingsport Mets 10-2. Levi Hyams had the big blow in the fifth with a grand slam, his second home run in as many days. Carlos Franco, a DSL player for the Braves the last two years, went 2 for 3 with two walks and a run scored. Felix Marte continued his hot hitting, going 2-4 with an RBI triple, two runs scored, and an outfield assist. Eduardo Castillo, another DSL prospect for Atlanta, pitched six solid innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 5. He didn't walk a batter.
