Braves Sign LHP Daniel Rodriguez Out Of Mexican League

The Atlanta Braves have signed left-handed pitcher Daniel Rodriguez out of the Mexican League, a triple-A level summer league. Though he goes by Daniel, his full name is Hector Daniel Rodriguez, and his stats from the Mexican League can be found here.

The 27-year old left-hander is having a good season, with a 2.54 ERA and a 1.256 WHIP -- both above his career norms of 4.24 ERA and 1.608 WHIP. He must have figured something out different this year, or else he's simply coming into his own, as his walks are down and his strikeouts are up. He currently leads the Mexican League in strikeouts with 135 in 117 innings pitched.

According to beat writer Mark Bowman, Rodriguez will pitch for the Gwinnett Braves after a visa issue is resolved. According to Wren, via Bowman, Rodriguez will begin next season in Gwinnett's starting rotation.

He seems like an intriguing pitcher, though I'm not sure I'd call him a prospect. Pitchers can take time to develop, so that could be what's going on here, but we need to see what he throws and how hard he throws before making an accurate judgement about who we signed.
