Braves Quote For The Day ... Ross Steals One

A little bit of history happened in last night's Atlanta Braves 12-to-6 series-clinching victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. A guy playing in his 636th Major League game stole his first base. Yep, Braves backup catcher David Ross used the pitcher's slow delivery, and diverted attention to slugger Paul Janish at the plate, to swipe second base without so much as a throw. Here's the scoop:

With some assistance from Braves starting catcher Brian McCann, Ross was able to secure the second-base bag. He said he will proudly display it inside his family residence in Florida.

"It's a stolen base, and I'm going to have it in my house so that everybody knows that I at least have one," Ross said. "I'm pretty proud of it and I got a pretty good jump, that's for sure."

Former Braves manager Russ Nixon and the Astros' Chris Snyder are the only catchers since 1900 to play more than 636 games without recording a stolen base.

Ross playfully admitted that he thought about raising the second-base bag in the air after he completed the steal.

"I actually thought about it, I really did," Ross said. "But it was still a tight game and I've got to keep my professionalism. I was really excited. I was really happy."

Rossy is one of the great characters on this Braves team.

"Mac’s got a ton in his career and I’m just jealous," Ross said. "I need to catch him a little bit. He’s got like five or six a year. I have one in my career. I told Mike (Bourn) when I came in after the game, I’m coming for him."

In 11 Major League seasons David Ross has thrown out 133 of 217 would-be base stealers. That 38% caught stealing percentage is the fourth-best among all active catchers, behind only Henry Blanco and two of the Flying Molina Brothers, Yadier and Jose.
