Braves Trade Cory Rasmus for Left-Handed Reliever Scott Downs

USA TODAY Sports

According to the Braves twitter account, and various other accounts, the Braves have traded right-handed reliever for the Angels left-handed reliever Scott Downs.

Downs has a 1.84 ERA and 3.31 FIP this season, with a career 3.47 ERA and 3.97 FIP. He limits left-handed batters to a .207 average for his career and has been an established left-handed reliever for nearly a decade. This year, lefties have a .219 wOBA against him. He will likely be used almost exclusively in lefty-lefty situations now and in the post-season should the Braves hold onto their 8.5 game lead.

This is a quality grab by the Braves and they did not have to give up much to get him. He is a free agent after this season and is owed about $2 million for the remainder of the year, based on my estimations.

Everyone expected the Braves to trade for a left-handed reliever and Wren was able to do so quickly and at an affordable price. The next move, if any, will likely be a bench bat of the left-handed variety.
