Braves take two of three from Marlins with 9-4 win

One day after becoming the first team in history to have a 14-game winning streak come to an end with a 1-0 loss, the Braves' bats woke up for Sunday's series finale, cranking out nine runs and 12 hits en route to a 9-4 win over Miami.

Despite the final result, things didn't start off well for Mike Minor and Atlanta. With one out in the second inning, Ed Lucas' pop up fell in between Dan Uggla and Jason Heyward for a double. Two batters later, Jake Marisnick followed with a single that brought home Lucas and made it a 1-0 game. After a Koyie Hill single put runners on first and third, starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez doubled over Justin Upton's head, plating two runs.

Down 3-0, Atlanta got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Dan Uggla's sacrifice fly scored Evan Gattis, who had reached on a ground-rule double. Things stayed that way until the fifth inning, when Freddie Freeman connected a three-run homer to give the Braves the lead at 4-3. It was Freeman's 14th homer of the season.

Minor gave up the lead rather quickly in the top of the sixth inning. A leadoff walk to Giancarlo Stanton, followed by a Placido Polanco single put runners on first and third with no outs for Lucas. He flew out to center, but it was deep enough to score Stanton and tie things up at four.

Alvarez left after the sixth inning, finishing with a line of 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. With Alvarez out of the game, Atlanta feasted on the Marlins' relievers. Joey Terdoslavich walked, and advanced to third on a single by Heyward, one of his four hits during the game. B.J. Upton, filling in for his brother who left with a cramp, lined out to left, but Terdoslavich managed to come in and score to make it a 5-4 game.

Back-to-back doubles from Evan Gattis and Chris Johnson plated Heyward, Freeman, and Gattis, increasing the Braves' lead to 8-4. Minor finished with a solid line of 7 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. He recorded five whiffs on 90 total pitches.

Another Heyward hit scored Jordan Schafer in the bottom of the eighth to end the scoring at 9-4. Luis Avilan and Anthony Varvaro each threw a scoreless inning of relief to close things out.
