Series Recap: Marlins at Braves

For the first time since the July 22-25 series against the New York Mets, the Braves failed to record a series sweep. Instead, they took two out of three from the Marlins as Atlanta continues to rack up wins heading toward the playoffs.

Braves pitching allowed just 13 hits and five runs during the series, with four of those runs coming on Sunday. Brandon Beachy was fantastic Friday night, taking a huge step forward with eight innings of shutout baseball while striking out six batters and walking just one. Alex Wood backed that up Saturday with a fantastic start, scattering two hits and one walk over six scoreless innings. In six innings of work, Atlanta's bullpen allowed just two hits and one run.

Offensively, Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman led the way. Heyward continues to produce out of the leadoff spot, racking up six hits and a walk during the series. Freeman had four hits, including a double and a homer, to go along with three walks. Chris Johnson, Justin Upton and Brian McCann all homered during game one of the series. Evan Gattis chipped in four hits during the series, including three in the series finale.

Andrelton Simmons accumulated just one hit during the three-game set, while Dan Uggla went hitless. He did, however, have two walks and a sacrifice fly.

Injury notes:

Jordan Walden was hit with a line drive on his throwing hand in game two of the series, but x-rays were negative and he should avoid the disabled list.

Justin Upton left Sunday's game with a hamstring cramp that shouldn't keep him out of the lineup.

Brian McCann didn't start Saturday and Sunday's games due to a sore knee. It's not considered to be serious at this point.
