Despite outhitting the Bulls, Gwinnett fell to Durham 5-4. Stefan Gartrell collected two hits, including his sixth double for Gwinnett. Third baseman Joe Leonard went 1-2 at the plate and took a walk, his 21st of the season. After committing only one error all year, Leonard, who is usually a slick fielder in the field, has committed five errors in the past two games. Cody Martin, our seventh-ranked prospect, recovered from a horrible outing on August 10th, throwing five innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and four walks, striking out seven. In 61.2 innings at the Triple-A level, Martin has missed a bat an inning, though his walk rate has increased substantially this season in his first year in the upper minors. Per usual, Ryan Buchter struck out a couple of batters in one inning of work, while Australia-native Andrew Russell also punched out one in an inning out of the 'pen.

The big news of the evening was the end of Christian Bethancourt's 40-game on-base streak, as he went 0-4 with an error. Tommy La Stella continued his hot hitting, going 1-2 with a couple of walks. The second baseman is sporting a 1.093 OPS in his past ten games. Jose Martinez notched the only extra-base hit for the squad, while Barrett Kleinknecht and and pitcher Michael Lee contributed two hits to the offense. Lee, a six-foot-seven righty, pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on six hits and a walk, fanning five. Thomas Keeling, Shae Simmons, and Ryne Harper combined to pitch two innings of scoreless relief, fanning two.

Lynchburg squeezed past Wilmington Friday evening, winning 6-5. Williams Perez had an odd start, going six and a third innings and allowing five runs, three of which were earned, on eight hits and three walks, fanning only one. The Venezuela-native kept his infield defense busy, inducing 11 groundouts. Brandon Cunniff pitched an inning and two-thirds, walking two and striking out three. Nate Hyatt also pitched an inning of scoreless relief but made it interesting, allowing a hit and walking two. The offense collected nine hits on the evening, five of which being of the extra-base variety. Josh Elander and Trenton Moses each hit their second home run since joining the Hillcats, while Matt Lipka and Daniel Castro legged out triples. Designated hitter Levi Hyams collected a couple of hits, including his ninth double, and took a walk.

Rome fell to Charleston 8-4 at State Mutual Stadium Friday night. Ronald Luna collected three hits, while the ever-toolsy Felix Marte had the only extra-base hit of the evening for the Braves, smacking his ninth double of the season. Marte has been on a bit of a hot streak lately after a horrid July, posting an .808 OPS in the month of August with two doubles, two triples, and a homer. The right fielder entices with an intriguing power-speed combination, but he can never seem to put it together over a full season of work. Jose Peraza collected a hit and knocked in three, committing his 27th error in the field. Wes Parsons struggled in just over five innings of work, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk, fanning three. Patrick Scoggin threw two and two-thirds innings and flashed bat-missing stuff with five strikeouts, but the big righty also allowed a couple of hits and a couple of runs in relief of Parsons. Matt Chaffee also struck out two but also allowed a couple of runs in an inning out of the bullpen.

Burlington scored a run in the bottom of the first inning off of Andrew Waszak, and this would turn out to be all they would need in the game. Waszak pitched well, fanning five and walking two in five and two-thirds innings of work, but the offense couldn't bail him out. Jordan Sechler pitched just over a couple of innings of relief, striking out three and allowing one hit. Victor Reyes collected a couple of hits while Victor Caratini continued to do Victor Caratini things, smashing his 20th double in 202 plate appearances and raising his slash line to .400/.543/.543 over his past ten games (.325/.436/.476 overall). He's, uh, pretty good.

The GCL squad blanked the GCL Blue Jays, pounding them 8-0. Fernelys Sanchez continued his hot hitting, pounding a couple of hits, including his second home run of the season, to bring his slash line to .306/.342/.556 over his past ten games. The first three hitters in the lineup — Livesay, Harper, and Garcia — all had a couple of hits apiece, including Harper's 12th double. Tanner Murphy and Ian Hagenmiller, both high-potential 2013 draftees, also pounded doubles, their second in professional ball. Hagenmiller has a power approach at the plate with a big bat wrap in his load, but he keeps his hands connected fairly well and shows impressive bat speed, which bodes well for his future power potential. Daniel Cordero kept the ball on the ground in his six solid innings, allowing five hits and no walks, striking out one. Richard Paulino and Tyler Vail, a 20th-round selection out of Temple College, combined for three innings of no-hit baseball, striking out four.
