Two errors and two home runs were just too much for Atlanta to overcome in Tuesday night's 5-3 loss to the New York Mets.
An Andrelton Simmons throwing error in the bottom of the first allowed Eric Young to reach base, then Young moved up to third base by stealing second and advancing on a groundout. With two outs against Braves starter Brandon Beachy, Ike Davis singled to right, scoring Young and making it a 1-0 game.
Another error allowed the Mets offense to get going again in the bottom of the sixth inning against Beachy. Back-to-back singles by Young and Daniel Murphy put runners on first and second with no outs. The Mets then called for a double steal, and Brian McCann tried to gun down Murphy at second base. However, he made a terrible throw that was off the mark and bounced past Paul Janish into center field, allowing Young to score and make it a 2-0 game.
Marlon Byrd followed with his 21st home run of the season, an absolute smash that upped New York's advantage to 4-0.
Zack Wheeler held Atlanta scoreless through six innings, but the wheels came off in the seventh inning with two outs. A Janish double and walks to Joey Terdoslavich and Jason Heyward loaded the bases for Simmons. Heyward's plate appearance leading to the walk was fantastic, working it to nine pitces before earning the free pass and chasing Wheeler from the game. Simmons welcomed reliever Carlos Torres by roping a double down the left field line, clearing the bases and cutting the deficit to just one run at 4-3.
That's as close as Atlanta would get. The Mets added an insurance run in the eighth thanks to Davis' eighth homer of the year, a solo blast to make it a 5-3 game. Brandon Beachy finished with a line of 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, and 4 K. Wheeler's line was 6.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K.
The two team's are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 PM ET.
