Freddie Freeman homers as Braves top Marlins 2-1

In a battle of young right-handers, both Julio Teheran and Jose Fernandez impressed Friday night in Atlanta. Fortunately for the Braves, the big offensive blow of the game came with Fernandez on the mound, as Freddie Freeman's two-run first inning homer was enough to propel Atlanta to a 2-1 win.

Teheran allowed just four hits and one run in 6.1 innings pitched, with three walks and eight strikeouts on the night. His only run allowed came on a triple by Fernandez and a RBI single from Christian Yelich in the third inning.

Atlanta got to Fernandez in the first inning, and luckily that was all the offense the Braves would need. Elliot Johnson, hitting in the two-spot, doubled with one out to bring up Freddie Freeman. Freeman connected on the first pitch he saw, launching his 17th home run to center field to make it a 2-0 game at that point.

Fernandez finished with a line of 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K.

With Craig Kimbrel and Jordan Walden unavailable tonight, Anthony Varvaro stepped up in a big way, firing two scoreless innings in relief and recording his first career save.

Notes:

-Justin Upton hopes to be back in the lineup tomorrow after being hit on the hand Thursday night.
