Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/30

Durham Bulls 1, Gwinnett Braves 5

Gwinnett scored five runs in the fifth and never looked back, beating Durham, 5-1. Ernesto Mejia lead the Braves offense with three hits, two of which were doubles, and scored a run in the process. He now has a whopping 64 extra-base hits this season. Stefan Gartell went deep for the ninth time this season, raising his OBP to .343 this season. On the bump Kameron Loe and Yohan Flande combined to throw nine innings of six hit, one run baseball. Loe has actually pitched fairly well in 76.1 innings with Gwinnett, despite a rather pedestrian strikeout-to-walk of 37:17. Gwinnett will begin their final series of the year today at Charlotte.

Mississippi went ahead in the 9^th thanks to a Jamie Pedroza home run and was able to hold off Jacksonville 3-2. Pedroza also added a single earlier in the game, upping his average on the season to .283. Christian Bethancourt sprayed his 21^st double of the season and was driven in to score. Ian Thomas had a solid start going six innings giving up one earned on two hits. Pat Egan blew the lead in the 8^th giving up three hits, but did have #TWTW as we would find out in the next half inning. Ryne Harper came on to lock down the save, despite allowing three base runners. Mississippi will conclude their regular season with three more games against Jacksonville, the team they are tied with for the final Southern League Playoff spot. Grab your popcorn, folks.

Aside from Kyle Kubitza, the Lynchburg offense was dreadful Friday night, only collecting three hits and three walks. Kubitza however, reached three of his four times at the plate, roping his 28^th double of the season. Matt Lipka did creat some problems on the bases for Carolina, swiping three bags. Starter Jarrett Miller went seven innings allowing four earned, raising his ERA on the season to 3.73. Lynchburg will finish off their regular season today against Salem before their playoff series begins Wednesday v. Potomac.

Unlike Lynchburg, Rome did bring their bats out Friday, scoring eight runs on 10 hits. Edison Sanchez had himself a day at the plate, going deep and doubling, while drawing two walks, reaching four of his five times at the plate. The 22-year-old now has a .391 OBP in 68 games this season. Kyle Wren also went deep for the second time of the season. Daniel Carroll had three singles of his own, coming around to score twice. Starter Patrick Scoggin was roughed up, giving up three runs on five hits with a poor 4:4 strikeout-to-walk. Reliever Matt Chaffe on the other hand threw 2.1 hitless innings, striking out six. Between Lynchburg and Rome, he now has a 80:28 strikeout-to-walk in 59.1 innings. Rome will finish their regular season with three more games against Charleston.

In the final game of the season, Danville’s pitching dominated. Jean Carlos Gil went 5.2 shutout innings, scattering two hits. Tyler Vail continued where Gil left off, throwing 3.1 hitless innings with two walks and two strikeouts. At the plate, 19-year-old Bryan De La Rosa drew two walks, finishing the season with a .261/.328/.306 triple slash in 32 games. Blake Brown roped his fifth double finishing off a rather disappointing season. The 22-year-old was demoted from Rome earlier in the season and finished with a .202/.292/.296 across both levels. Seth Moranda added his sixth double, ending the season with a rather solid .341 OBP.
