Jordan Schafer began his rehab stint with Gwinnett Saturday.

Gwinnett Braves

Gwinnett Braves 3, Durham Bulls 11

  • Jordan Schafer DH: 1-4, 2B
  • Ernesto Mejia 1B: 2-4, 2B (25)
  • Matt Pagnozzi C: 1-3, HR (6), BB, 2R

  • Kameron Loe: 4IP, 6H, 5ER, 3BB, 2K
  • Joe Beimel: IP, 0H, 0ER, BB, 2K

A day after BJ Upton left Gwinnett to return to Atlanta, Jordan Schafer began his rehab assignment at DH, going 1-4 with a double. It’s unclear which day they are targeting for his return. Ernesto Mejia collected his 25th double of the season, his 53rd extra base hit of the season. Recently signed free agent outfielder Greg Golson (who you may recall doing this), went 2-4 with a double in his first start with Gwinnett. Kameron Loe made his first start since being outrighted to Triple-A, giving up five earned over four innings. Juan Cedeno and Mark Lamm gave up a combined six runs in relief.

Mississippi Braves 6, Huntsville Stars 5

  • Mycal Jones CF: 2-4, BB, 2R
  • Christian Bethancourt C: 1-5
  • Tommy La Stella 2B: 3-4, 2B (12), BB
  • Edward Salcedo 3B: 0-4

  • Gus Schlosser: 5IP, 2H, ER, 3BB, 5K
  • Ryne Harper: 2IP, 4H, ER, 0BB, 3K

Mississippi rallied late Saturday, scoring four runs in the 9th to overcome a 4-2 deficit. Ryne Harper almost gave the lead back in the bottom of the inning, but was able to escape with the win. Christian Bethancourt and Tommy La Stella extended both of their on-base and hit streaks, respectively. Both swiped a bag, as well. La Stella reached on four of his five times at the plate, hitting a double and two singles while coaxing a walk. His 21 game hitting streak is the longest in Mississippi Braves history. Jamie Pedroza hit a solo shot and doubled. Gus Schlosser worked a solid five innings, throwing 75 pitches and only allowing two hits on the day. Gary Moran gave up the lead in relief, allowing Brock Kjeldgard to hit his second home run of the day.

Mississippi Player Stats

Salem Red Sox 3, Lynchburg Hillcats 0

  • Matt Lipka CF: 0-4
  • Kyle Kubitza 3B: 1-4
  • Josh Elander: 0-4
  • Greg Ross: 7IP, 4H, ER, BB, 5K
  • Wilson Rivera: IP, 0H, 0ER, BB, K
  • Chasen Shreve: IP, 3H, 2ER, 0BB, K

It was a close game throughout until the ninth, with Lynchburg falling to Salem 3-0. Greg Ross went seven innings, giving up four hits and one run. The problem was one run was enough for Salem. Not much to report from the offensive side of things as the team only scattered three hits and drew two walks. Kyle Kubitza did have one of those singles and now has 11 hits in his past 6 games.

Lynchburg Player Stats

Lexington Legends 1, Rome Braves 4

  • Kyle Wren CF: 2-4, 3B (2), R
  • Jose Peraza SS: 2-4, 2B (14)
  • Daniel Carroll RF: 1-2, 2B (3), R, OF assist
  • Lucas Sims: 5.1IP, 7H, ER, 3BB, 8K
  • Alex Wilson, 2IP, 3H, 0ER, 0BB, 3K

Rome scored a pair of runs in the 3rd and 7th, which was enough to hold off Lexington 4-1. Lucas Sims got the start, one giving up one run on seven hits. He struck out eight and walked three, also benefiting from three double plays turned behind him as well as a pickoff at second. Alex Wilson got the two inning save, his fourth of the season, striking out three. Kyle Wren and Jose Peraza showed off their speed once again, with Wren tripling and Peraza stealing his 49th bag of the season. Each went 2-4 with an extra base hit and a run batted in. You can't help but to be impressed with Peraza’s .342 OBP as a 19-year-old, especially at SS.

Rome Player Stats

Pulaski Mariners 5, Danville Braves 2

  • Johan Samargo SS: 1-3, BB
  • Mikey Reynolds 2B: 1-3
  • Carlos Sanchez C: 2-3, R
  • Mike Dodig 3B: 1-3, 2B (1), R, E
  • Jean Carlos Gil: 6IP, 4H, 0ER, BB, 2K
  • Ryan Gunther 1.1IP, 6H, ER (5R), 0BB, K

After taking a 2-0 lead in the sixth, Danville got sloppy on defense giving up five runs in the 7th and 8th. Ryan Gunther was the recipient of the misfortune. Although he did give up six hits, only one of the five runs allowed was earned. Jean Carlos Gil went the first six, giving up no runs on four hits. The offense was scarce, only collecting six hits and two walks. Carlos Sanchez did have a multi-hit game while scoring one of the two Danille runs. Mike Dodig had the only extra base hit in the lineup, his first double of the season.

*2013 second round pick Victor Caratini has sat out the past three games due to a sore thumb.
