Waffle House > cheese steaks...at least in this series anyway.
The Braves continued their hot streak with an impressive sweep of the slumping Phillies, dropping them to 16.5 games back. Chris Johnson had a good series even though his 11-game hitting streak came to end; his eight game multi-hit streak tied for the longest such streak in team history. He continues to lead the NL in hitting with a .346 batting average.
Johnson has shown no signs of slowing down yet. He's also had a 12-game hitting streak this year and hasn't had consecutive hitless games since June 17-18. He and Brian McCann hit back-to-back homers in the opener of the series, the seventh time the Braves have done that this year.
Justin Upton seems to be finding his groove again. He had four hits in the series and now has a nine-game hitting streak, raising his average from .249 to .260.
BJ Upton returned from the DL in this series and had three hits; one of those was a home run that was overturned because of fan interference.
One guy who hasn't performed well of late is Dan Uggla. While he had the game-winning RBI in the extra-inning game, Uggla still has just three hits over his last 36 at-bats. I suppose most, if not all, of us have come to the conclusion that Uggla is a streaky hitter.
Alex Wood pitched a pretty good ballgame in the finale and if he keeps this up, the Braves will have a problem when Paul Maholm returns from the DL. Wood held the Phillies to just two hits in six innings.
Kris Medlen gave up three solo homers, but struck out eight in six innings in beating the Phillies and their young debuting starter Ethan Martin in the opener.
Brandon Beachy had a much better outing than in his 2013 debut, pitching into the seventh inning with the lead, in line to beat the Phillies for the first time in eight starts against them, but alas, it was not to be.
The bullpen tossed 11.2 scoreless innings - one inherited runner did score - in the series with 15 strikeouts. Craig Kimbrel earned the save in each game and while I'm sure that's all well and good, that will probably mean he'll be unavailable for the opening game of the Washington series.
