Braves hire Bo Porter as third base coach, but Fredi will be staying on as manager

Fredi Gonzalez and 4 other members of the Braves' coaching staff will be returning next season. Yep, he's officially safe.

Good news, everyone! The Braves have filled another open position on their coaching staff, and they got a former Major League manager with recent experience with the job, to boot! Former Houston Astros manager Bo Porter will be joining the Braves in 2015 as the 3rd Base/outfield and baserunning coach. This news was originally broken on Twitter last night by Astros County on twitter.

Hope you weren't liking Bo Porter on MLB Network. He just joined the Braves as 3B Coach.
— Astros County (@AstrosCounty) October 2, 2014

Porter, 42, previously managed the Astros in 2013-14 and has 20 yrs of experience as a player, coach and manager in the minor/major leagues.
— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) October 3, 2014

2 things here:

 • Clearly, this means that Doug Dascenzo has been replaced as the 3rd Base coach of the Braves. Rarely do you hear about a guy getting fired at the same exact time as the replacement arrives, but there you have it. In addition, Assistant Hitting Coach Scott Fletcher has also been given the boot. All other coaches will retain their spot.
 • Bo Porter has ties with the current Manager, Fredi Gonzalez. That is relevant here because, yep, you guessed it: Fredi Gonzalez is officially coming back for the 2015 season.

Braves interim GM John Hart announced today that manager Fredi Gonzalez will return for his fifth season with the Braves in 2015.
— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) October 3, 2014

Just as Dan said yesterday, these are not the type of moves that suggest that the team is still actively searching for a General Manager, and Fredi staying on as manager basically cinches it, because no team would take the option of finding their "own" manager from the new GM before the new GM has even been hired.

So, I'm totally on board with the theory that the Braves have already found their new GM, and they found the replacement in-house. The only question now is whether or not John Hart takes the Interim tag off, or if Coppolella gets promoted. Either way, this should take most of the drama out of the GM search.

Meanwhile, are you guys excited about another season of Fedi Gonzalez as manager? I can feel the excitement! The red-hot, steaming, seething, rage-filled excitement!
