The Atlanta Braves have a vacancy at second base and CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that they may turn to veteran free agent Stephen Drew to fill the position.
Drew has played shortstop for most of his major league career but played second base last season for the Yankees. Drew never got on track offensively last season and hit just .162 in 300 plate appearances. He signed with the Boston Red Sox after the season began and was eventually traded to the Yankees in exchange for Kelly Johnson at the trade deadline.
Despite his struggles, Drew has drawn interest from the Yankees, Mets and A's this offseason according to Heyman. The Braves are looking for a stopgap at second base until prospect Jose Peraza is ready to take over the job on a full time basis. That could happen as soon as this season but it seems that Peraza is likely to begin next season in the minors.
Drew is from Valdosta and makes his offseason home in Georgia.
