With Gavin Floyd's elbow breaking last night, the Braves are opting to go with an extra reliever in Ryan Buchter until they decide to call up Alex Wood to start.
Essentially, Buchter and Juan Jaime will be battling to see who keeps their spot when Wood is called up to take the fifth spot in the rotation.
Buchter is a 27-year-old reliever who has strikeout ability but serious command problems. Buchter being a lefty also helps, since currently Luis Avilan is the only left-handed reliever.
The Braves could use having another arm around given their recent spat of extra inning games and the overall wear down of their bullpen, but we would be best served if Buchter only comes into the game during blowouts as his numbers in the minors are not exactly impressive.
So far this season, Buchter has a 3.79 ERA in 27 games with Gwinnett.
