Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/20

Cody Martin pitched six strong innings for Gwinnett on Friday.

Gwinnett outlasted Louisville Friday evening, beating the Bats 1-0. The Braves were only able to string together six hits and one extra-base hit, but Joey Terdoslavich was able to push across the winning run in the ninth. Terdoslavich has been in a disturbing tailspin since the beginning of May, posting a .512 OPS during this month-and-a-half stretch, so a hit and a couple of walks is something good to take away for the 25-year-old. Phil Gosselin had the only extra-base hit for the Braves, collecting his 18th double of the season. On the mound, Cody Martin tossed six scoreless frames despite giving up five hits and four walks. The big right-hander collected six strikeouts and threw 58 percent of his pitches for strikes. Atahualpa Severino and James Hoyt chipped in scoreless appearances out of the 'pen, with James Hoyt earning the win in his first appearance in Triple-A.

Mississippi fell to Jackson 3-1. Aaron Northcraft started and only went three innings, allowing one earned run on two hits, striking out one. Ryan Weber pitched four great innings in relief, allowing no hits or runs while fanning six. Ryan Kelly added a scoreless frame, but Ryne Harper couldn't keep the game tied in the ninth, surrendering two runs on four hits and a walk. Jose Peraza had a hit and a stolen base in his second game in Mississippi. Jim Callis, one of MLB.com's excellent prospect gurus, had this to say about Peraza.

While I would still take Sims above Peraza, this shows how Peraza's stock has risen in the eyes of many this season. Elmer Reyes had a three-hit night to bring his average to .325, while Kyle Kubitza knocked a double, the only extra-base hit of the contest for Mississippi. Kubitza's line now stands at .295/.402/.442 through 66 games in the Southern League. While I expect the average to drop off some, the first half was very kind to Kubitza and showcased his developing ability to handle upper-level stuff, which was a big concern coming into the season.

Potomac Nationals vs. Lynchburg Hillcats

According to the MiLB website, the Hillcats game was postponed due to a power outage in Lynchburg. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on August 19th.

Hickory handed Rome their 48th loss of the season Friday evening, beating them 4-2. Matt Marksberry was roughed up in four and two-thirds innings of work. A.J. Holland allowed a run in one and two-thirds, while Richie Tate and Pete Perez had scoreless outings out of the bullpen. Johan Camargo and Ross Wilson had the only multi-hit performances for the R-Braves, with Camargo lacing his ninth double of the season, the only extra-base hit of the evening for Rome. After an adjustment period in April, Camargo has been a different player at the plate, posting a .316/.348/.408 line in 42 games since the beginning of May.

Danville moved to 2-0 on the season after beating Kingsport 7-2. Andrew Waszak got the start for Danville and pitched well, throwing four shutout innings and fanning three. Carlos Salazar pitched an inning of relief and allowed no hits or walks while fanning one. Matt Weaver and Luis Miranda both pitched two frames and allowed one run in their respective outings. 19th-round selection Codey McElroy compiled four hits on the afternoon, while left fielder Cody Livesay and first baseman Mike Dodig both collected three hits and a double. 2012 16th-rounder Fernelys Sanchez is getting his first shot at the Appalachian League after two seasons of complex-level ball. He laced his first double of the season and added two hits and a walk to the offensive attack.

The Gulf Coast League began play on Friday, and the GCL Braves opened their season against the Astros' Gulf Coast League affiliate. The team strung together nine hits and four runs, but four errors and 12 hits allowed by the defense and pitching staff resulted in an eight spot for the Astros. Mauricio Cabrera pitched an inning in his return from a forearm injury, allowing a run on a walk and a wild pitch, striking out one. Francisco Gonzalez took the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in three frames, giving up a home run to Kristian Trompiz. Abraham Espinosa allowed two runs, none of which were earned, in two and two-thirds innings of work, while Jared Dettmann pitched an inning and a third, giving up three hits and no runs. On offense, Ozhaino Albies had a couple of singles and a walk, while Kelvin Estevez and Dylan Manwaring also added two singles to the attack. Ray-Patrick Didder (65-grade name, according to Dan Simpson) had the only extra-base hit for the Braves, smacking the team's first double of the season.
