The Mud Hens took the first game of the doubleheader necessitated by yesterday's bad weather, toppling the G-Braves 7-5. Aaron Northcraft got his first AAA start in the game that started on Tuesday and was good in 1.2 innings of work before the rains came and washed out his outing. Newly-signed Kanekoa Texeira started off the game for Gwinnett when it resumed yesterday and was solid, giving up a pair of runs in 5.1 frames. Unfortunately, Ryan Buchter had a tough outing that including a pair of home runs including a grand slam that gave the G-Braves' lead away to Toledo. He exhibited poor command and was just straight-up putrid yesterday. Nonetheless, quite a few Gwinnett players had nice offensive days, including the scorching-hot Phil Gosselin, who launched his second homer of the season and also notched a pair of singles and a walk. Tyler Pastornicky, Joey Terdoslavich, and Todd Cunningham each chipped in with two-hit games as well.

Cody Martin threw a complete game in the second game of Gwinnett's twin bill against Toledo, as the Braves topped the Mud Hens 7-1. Martin was effective despite not missing many bats, scattering only three hits and two walks against two strikeouts. The lone run he gave up came on a Ben Guez solo home run in the fifth inning, but it was a strong outing for Martin overall. Phil Gosselin continued to rake, picking up a pair of hits and a walk, including his second home run of the doubleheader. He had only hit one homer in his first 68 games of the season, but is on a two-game home run streak now. Like they say, power comes in spurts. Todd Cunningham and Joey Terdoslavich also got in on the action, hitting solo home runs of their own.

Christian Bethancourt had a productive game at the dish, singling, doubling, and walking in four plate appearances, and throwing in a steal for good measure. Daniel Rodriguez will take to the mound for Gwinnett against Toledo tonight.

The M-Braves toppled the Barons in the Rickwood Classic yesterday afternoon by a 5-2 count. Greg Ross made his AA debut and was solid, giving up a pair of runs in 5.2 frames, striking out three and walking one. Ross, a twenty-four-year-old righty who was an 18th-round draft pick for the Braves back in 2011, doesn't have overwhelming stuff and hasn't put up great peripherals in the minors. However, it's nice to see him performing well and giving the Braves a nice organizational arm. Chasen Shreve picked up the save in the game and struck out the side in a perfect inning, improving his K:BB ratio on the season to 62:7; that's quite good. Seth Loman had the biggest offensive game for the M-Braves, doubling and hitting his tenth home run of the campaign. Kyle Kubitza also continued his strong work, doubling twice to push his average over the .300 mark and his OBP over the .400 mark. It's been quite remarkable to see how well he's adjusted to AA pitching and has actually cut down on his strikeout rate from last season. José Peraza had the day off. Williams Perez will take the mound for Mississippi tonight in another matchup with the Barons.

Lynchburg outslugged Wilmington 11-7 in what was not exactly a pitchers' duel last night in Delaware. Zach Jadofsky made his second start of the season for Lynchburg and was ineffective, giving up five runs on six hits and a walk. Jadofsky struck out three batters, but was bitten by the home run bug, as he gave up a pair of dingers to Blue Rocks batters. Navery Moore relieved Jadofsky and gave up a pair of runners in three and a third innings. Nate Hyatt was the highlight on the mound for Lynchburg, as he pitched the final 2.2 frames and gave up only one hit while striking out five batters. Although the pitching as a whole was a bit shoddy for the 'Cats, the offensive output of the team more than compensated, as they plated eleven runs on sixteen hits. José Martinez and Kevin Ahrens each contributed three-hit games in the middle of the Hillcats' lineup. Kyle Wren and Daniel Castro also had nice games at the top of the lineup, with Wren chipping in a pair of singles and Castro doubling twice, his fifteenth and sixteenth two-baggers of the season. Tyler Tewell and David Nick also had two-hit performances. An intriguing pitching matchup will take place in the second game of the Hillcats-Blue Rocks series tomorrow, as Lucas Sims will oppose Sean Manaea.

Rome took the first game of their doubleheader against Augusta, winning 6-4. Colby Holmes started for Rome in their game that began on Tuesday and was suspended, and had a rough three innings, giving up five hits and a pair of runs. Tyler Brosius finished up the final six frames yesterday and was fairly effective, allowing four hits and three free passes in six innings of work, allowing a pair of runs. Rome got a bunch of offensive production from a trio of their outfielders in Victor Reyes, Connor Lien, and Blake Brown. Reyes and Lien had the exact same line, going 3-4 with a double, and each players were caught stealing on the basepaths. Blake Brown racked up a pair of hits, including his third triple of the season. Ross Wilson contributed a two-run homer in the game as well.

Rome shut out Augusta 4-0 in the second game of their doubleheader, sweeping the twin bill. Matt Marksberry started for the Braves and tiptoed his way out of trouble, giving up no runs despite allowing three hits and three free passes in 4.2 innings of work. This was largely due to the high number of strikeouts he accumulated, six in total. A.J. Holland was strong in the final 2.1 frames of the contest, allowing only one baserunner via a walk and striking out three hitters. Connor Oliver set the table well for the rest of Rome's lineup yesterday, singling three times in four plate appearances. He kind of negated that, however, by being picked off once and caught stealing another time. The thunder in the order came via Victor Caratini and Blake Brown, who both blasted solo homers in the game. Old CAC friend David Lee had some nice praise for Caratini's bat after watching him homer.

Danville dropped its home opener last night, falling 9-5 to the Astros' Appy League club. Andrew Waszak, who began the year as part of Rome's rotation, had a tough night, allowing six runs (five were earned) in 3.1 innings of work on eleven hits. Kyle Kinman didn't fare much better in a relief appearance following Waszak, surrendering three runs (two were earned) in an inning and two-thirds. Luis Miranda, however, made a strong relief appearance for Danville, pitching three innings and recording three strikeouts. Fangraphs' Nathaniel Stoltz was at the game and had some nice things to say about Miranda.

Jordan Edgerton stood out offensively in yesterday's game, smacking a trio of triples. A scout to whom I spoke at Tuesday's Danville-Johnson City game thought that Edgerton had a chance at becoming a legit prospect due to the strength of his bat, which would be fantastic since he was a ninth-round pick out of a D2 school. Unfortunately, he wasn't in the lineup for that game, so I can't really offer any further insights. Gerald Chin also doubled in the game, and Keith Curcio had a pair of singles and a walk in five PAs at the top of the lineup. Daniel Cordero will go for the D-Braves against the Astros tonight.

The GCL Braves couldn't muster much on offense against the GCL Tigers yesterday in a 5-1 defeat. 2014 18th-round pick Jacob Webb made his pro debut yesterday, getting the start, and had a rough first outing, giving up five hits and a pair of runs in an inning and two-thirds. Oriel Caicedo made his GCL debut, relieving Webb, and generated tons of ground balls while throwing strikes. He ultimately only struck out one hitter, but allowed only a run and five hits in 5.1 frames. Mauricio Cabrera, rehabbing a forearm strain, pitched the final two innings and was ineffective, surrendering a pair of runs on three hits and a walk. I'm just glad to see Cabrera on the mound, and less concerned about the actual results. The Braves only managed three hits yesterday, all singles, with Ozhaino Albies, Luke Dykstra, and Edward Salcedo picking up hits. Salcedo made his debut as an outfielder yesterday, logging nine innings in right field. Hey, I guess it's worth a shot. The Braves and Tigers will play again this afternoon.
