Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: NO-HITTER EDITION: 6/27

Yup, again.

Toledo Mud Hens 1, Gwinnett Braves 4

Gwinnett's pitching did the trick Friday, striking out 10, in a 4-1 win over Toledo. Yuneksy Maya got the start, throwing seven innings, allowing only one run (unearned), striking out six. The bullpen held down the final two innings, with James Hoyt recording his first save of the season. On offense, Jose Constanza reached two of his four times at the plate, scoring one of four Gwinnett runs. Tyler Pastornicky was slotted in the three hole, ripping two hits while driving in three. Since his demotion to Gwinnett, Pastornicky has hit a cool .300 in 30 games. Phil Gosselin continued his fine season in triple-A, hitting his 19th double of the season, sitting on a .330 average for the season.

Mississippi Braves 14, Birmingham Barons 6

Big time night for Mississippi. After being tied 5-5 going into the 9th, the M-Braves hung a 9 spot on the Barons, raking out a total of 18 hits. Jose Peraza continued to impose himself on the double-A level, reaching base four times at the top of the Mississippi order. Kyle Kubitza also did his usual damage, reaching in three of six PA's, raising his average to .307. Kubitza also decided to be great at stealing bases so far this season, swiping his 14th base in his 15 attempts. The bottom of the order came through, with the 7/8/9 hitters scoring half of the runs. Ryan Weber was touched up in his start, allowing three runs over 4.2, surrendering seven hits.

Lynchburg No-Hitcats 5, Wilmington Blue Rocks 0

*ctrl+c, ctrl+v* Honestly one of the cooler things I've seen in minor league baseball. Starter Cody Scarpetta, a 25-year-old RHP, made his third start for the Hillcats, tossing seven hitless innings. Scarpetta began 2014 in the Atlantic League's Lancaster Barnstormers (independent), before being signed by the Braves on June 12. The righty was originally drafted by the Brewers in the 11th round back in 2007. Benino Pruneda, also 25, threw the final two innings, finishing off the second no hitter inns many nights. Quite incredible. On offense, Kevin Ahrens was the catalyst, going 4-4 with three doubles, scoring twice. Eric Garcia reached three of five times from the leadoff spot, while also stealing his fifth base of the season.

Rome Braves 2, Savannah Sand Gnats 4

Rome took the loss Friday, but they gave up less than five runs and didn't commit an error, so it wasn't all bad. The lineup didn't do much to speak of, reaching five times via single and three times via walk. Victor Reyes crossed the plate twice, scoring both of Rome's runs.

Greeneville Astros 5, Danville Braves 11

Danville continued to hit the crap out of the ball Friday night, plating 11 runs. The Braves rookie league team is currently posting a league best .816 OPS and is averaging 6.8 runs/game. On the other side, their pitching has been quite and thus far, putting up a league worst 4.67 ERA. Six pitchers got work in Friday, all with clean sheets besides starter Ian Stiffler and last years 3rd round pick, Carlos Salazar. Salazar continued to struggle, giving up two runs and walking two in an inning of work. He did strikeout the side, but it included two wild pitches and a HBP in the process. Jordan Edgerton reached base four of five times, including a triple off Astros reliever Dean Deetz. Pinch runner and second baseman Gerald Chin ripped a bases clearing double, his fourth of the season. Justin Black also stayed hot, reaching base four times, which included two walks.

GCL Blue Jays 9, GCL Braves 10

Edward Salcedo had himself a monster game in his attempt to learn how to play OF down in the Gulf Coast League. As you can see from the line above, he was a one man wrecking crew, also adding an OF assist to his name. The numbers don't really mean anything at all, but still fun to see. After being held hitless in his debut, Braxton Davidson ripped a double, his first professional hit. The left fielder was also hit by a pitch. As good as the offense was, the pitching was just as bad, finishing with a final line of 9IP, 11H, 9ER, 10BB, 8K.
