Don Zimmer passes away Wednesday in Florida
Zimmer spent 66 years in baseball as a player, a manager and a coach. While many of us may not have seen Zimmer play during his 12-year MLB career as an infielder, we all saw him as either a manager or coach. When I first became interested in baseball, Zimmer was a coach for the Rockies but I remember having a baseball card of him as manager of the Cubs (1991 Topps). Of course, no one can forget Pedro Martinez throwing him to the ground in the 2003 ALCS.
Jon Singleton signs $10 million contract before MLB debut
Before Jon Singleton had stepped into a major-league batter's box for the Astros, he was already $10 million richer, and that doesn't sit well with some people. Of course, one would be crazy not to accept that much money, but I personally get a bit skeptical when teams offer unproven talent huge gobs of money. I'd have a guy prove himself before I deemed him worthy of a big contract.
David Ortiz is unhappy that David Price wasn't suspended
Last week's fracas between the Rays and Red Sox started when David Price drilled David Ortiz in the back with a pitch in his first at-bat on May 30. Tensions escalated from there which saw three managerial ejections, Brandon Workman receiving a six-game suspension for throwing behind Evan Longoria and a fine for David Price. The fine, according to Ortiz, was inadequate punishment.
Jordan Lyles pitches four innings with a broken hand
It would've been more gritty of him if it were his pitching hand that was broken. He'd fit in well in Arizona; Kevin Towers likes grit.
Lyles suffered the injury in the first inning Wednesday against Arizona when Martin Prado slid into home on a wild pitch. In all likelihood, he will not make his next scheduled start against Atlanta on Monday.
Johan Santana to miss remainder of 2014 season with torn Achilles tendon
Just when it looked like he was going to come back, BAM!! Another injury. This happened just days after Baltimore added him to the major-league roster, guaranteeing him $3 million.
Vladimir Guerrero's hits 50 Cent's horrible first pitch
Wouldn't you know? He gets a hit out of it!
