It was fun while it lasted.
Wade Miley struck out eight and ended the Braves' nine-game winning streak with a 3-1 Arizona win in the series finale.
Walks can kill, especially those of the leadoff variety, but what made Alex Wood issuing a leadoff walk in the third inning particularly frustrating was that it was to the pitcher Miley. Wood retired the next two with ease and would've been out of the inning had he done what he was supposed to against Miley. Instead, he had to face Paul Goldschmidt who sent Wood's offering clanging off the left field pole for a two-run homer.
Outside of that inning, Wood pitched rather well. He allowed only two other hits in seven innings of work even though he did walk three.
A leadoff walk hurt Miley as well, but not to the degree that it hurt Wood. In the fourth, Miley walked Justin Upton to start the inning, and then allowed Chris Johnson's RBI single.
The offense didn't do much else against Miley, but had several opportunities against the Arizona bullpen. Altogether, eight runners were stranded on base, five in scoring position.
Nick Evans hit a pinch-hit RBI double in the ninth as insurance. B.J. Upton struck out three times and was 0-4, ending his hitting streak at 11 games.
