Game Thread 7/9 Braves vs Mets

In which the Braves try not lose their fourth straight game to an inferior team.

Jim McIsaac

Happy Ervin Santana Day Braves fans! The Braves won't lose to the Mets tonight because the Mets are bad and they've already lost to them twice.

So yesterday there was a Braves related trade article by a columnist who a certain segment of Braves fans pay attention to. As with most trade related spitballing by newspaper columnists it was rather ridiculous. The gist was that since Christian Bethancourt was doing well in place of Evan Gattis perhaps the Braves should trade Gattis and some assorted minor league flotsam for David Price. Now this is ridiculous because Gattis doesn't even get the Braves on the phone with the Rays to talk about Price. The Rays don't want a 26 year old already in the bigs, they want young talent that will make them good again soon and will be strong trade chips in 5 years. In exchange for Price the Rays will be looking for a package of top flight prospects in excess of the package that the Cubs got from Oakland for Jeff Samadzija and Jason Hammel. That package included Addison Russell a top ten prospect in baseball and Billy Mckinney who was Oakland's second best prospect.

The Braves won't be pulling off any trades like that because they do not have any prospects comparable in value to those guys. A combination of successful graduation of prospects to the big leagues, the Justin Upton trade, and some very poor first round choices leaves the Braves farm system barren. Jose Peraza, Lucas Sims, and Christian Bethancourt are all solid prospects but none of them command the kind of value the Rays will be offered by other teams. The Rays will expect back a can't miss prospect very close to the bigs, and then another high level prospect likely superior to anything the Braves can offer. The latest Baseball Prospectus rankings didn't include a Braves player in the top 50.

Any column you read suggesting the Braves could be in on a Price caliber of player is trolling you for page clicks. The Braves will make moves at the deadline. Those moves are likely to be for a lefty reliever and a bench bat or two. The Braves just don't have the pieces to make a blockbuster move to get a difference maker in the rotation or as an every day player right now.
