I think this is the best we've ever seen Alex Wood pitch to date.
Evan Gattis provided the run support, Wood provided the rest with 12 strikeouts and some gutsy pitching in the sixth inning to win the series finale against the Marlins 1-0.
Gattis hit the first pitch from Nathan Eovaldi leading off the second inning for a home run, and that would be all Alex Wood would need despite 11 total hits by the Braves offense. Wood struck out eight through five innings, striking out the side in the fifth.
The lead would be endangered in the sixth when three straight one-out singles loaded the bases for the meat of the Marlins lineup. Wood, however, remained as cool as a cucumber by striking out Giancarlo Stanton on three pitches and caught Casey McGehee looking on a full count. I guess you can say Wood carved them up, right?
Wood had easy seventh and eighth innings before giving way to Craig Kimbrel; his 12 strikeouts matched a career high.
One other high note: Phil Gosselin had a three-hit game starting at third base.
