The Braves, already up 1-0 in the series, used a late Javy Lopez home run to push the series lead to 2-0 at Fulton County Stadium on Oct. 22, 1995.

Tom Glavine, making the first of what would be two World Series starts, struggled a bit in the early innings as Eddie Murray crushed a two-run home run to give Cleveland a 2-0 lead in the 2nd. Glavine settled in nicely after the homer, though, and worked around some iffy defense, keeping Atlanta in the game.

Chipper Jones cut the deficit in half in the 3rd inning with a sacrifice fly off Indians starter Dennis Martinez. David Justice would later tie the score with an RBI single.

Lopez came up to the plate with the score still tied 2-2 in the sixth. Justice was on third base with one out. Martinez got ahead 0-2, and after fouling off two pitches, Lopez crushed a breaking ball, giving the Braves a 4-2 lead and sending the crowd of 51,000+ into a frenzy.

Martinez's effectiveness up until the sixth inning was quite impressive despite him being the 3rd oldest pitcher (41) to start a World Series game. Indians manager Mike Hargrove was questioned after the game; why have Martinez pitch to Lopez when a struggling Rafael Belliard and Tom Glavine were due up next? Walking Lopez would've set up a double play and brought up at least one inferior pitcher. Even walking both Lopez and Belliard would've made sense.

It obviously worked out for the Braves.

The Indians scratched across a run in the 7th inning but were unable to complete the comeback as Mark Wohlers closed it out.

It wasn't the prettiest or cleanest game played, but the win gave the Braves supreme confidence heading into Cleveland for game 3. That game would prove to be a heartbreaker, and you'll be able to re-live it all over again in the next part of our 1995 look-back series.
