Braves sign Gordon Beckham to 1-year, $1.25 MM deal, per report

The Atlanta Braves have made an addition to their infield today, and they've brought home a local product, to boot. According to a report from Ken Rosenthal, the Braves have signed former Chicago White Sox infiielder Gordon Beckham to a one-year, $1.25 MM contract, with $500,000 in incentives.

Beckham was with the Chicago White Sox from 2009 until last season (with an extremely brief stint with the Los Angeles Angels in 2014 in there as well), and he finished the 2015 campaign with a slash line of .209/.275/.332 with 6 HRs, 63 wRC+, and a 0.3 fWAR. While those numbers aren't exactly anything to get super-excited about, he did have a decent season defensively, and obviously the Braves are hoping that he'll continue that trend when he gets a chance to play in the infield this season.

So basically, this signing continues a trend of signing relatively unheralded players to cheap, short-term deals. This was the case with the Bud Norris and Jim Johnson signings, and Beckham's contract is no different. Also, this probably means that Pedro Ciraco's time with the Braves will more-than-likely be coming to an end.

The cool part of this story is that Beckham was born and raised in the Atlanta area, and even went to college at UGA. So, it'd be pretty safe to say that Beckham is probably excited to be able to play for his hometown team.
