Mike Moustakas, Carlos Martinez named to All-Star team via Final Vote
Moustakas beat out Xander Bogaerts, Yoenis Cespedes, Brian Dozier, and Brett Gardner; he's hitting .301 with seven homers and 31 RBI for the Royals. Martinez is 10-3 with a 2.52 ERA for the Cardinals; he beat out Clayton Kershaw, Johnny Cueto, Troy Tulowitzki, and Jeurys Familia. Both Martinez and Moustakas are first-time All-Stars.
Brett Gardner replaces Alex Gordon on AL All-Star team
Gardner, as it turns out, didn't need to beat anyone for the Final Vote. Alex Gordon was the starting left fielder for the AL team, but suffered a groin strain on Thursday and won't be able to participate in the All-Star Game, which allowed Gardner to take his place. Gardner is the third Yankee to be selected after Mark Teixeira and Dellin Betances.
Brandon Beachy to start Saturday for the Dodgers
Beachy, who last pitched for the Braves in 2013, is slated to start Saturday for the Dodgers against Milwaukee. Beachy has missed 23 months due to a second TJ surgery; Don Mattingly said he wasn't worried about how he felt physically, but mentally.
Yesterday when we talked I didn't think he would be the starter today. We knew phyiscally he was ready, just through the trainers and how he's been doing and bouncing back. He's had some conversations with Farhan [Zaidi, general manager] and some of the guys, and absolutely feels like he's ready to go. That's what we needed to hear. We weren't worried about the physical part, it was more the mental side, and he sounds ready to go.
Once the Braves (hopefully) beat the Rockies, perhaps we shall tune in to see how Beachy fares.
Ariana Grande axed from MLB All-Star concert following donut shop incident
Ariana Grande was originally scheduled to headline a concert to be held Saturday in Cincinnati as part of MLB's All-Star festivities, but a certain donut shop incident has changed all that. In a surveillance video from a donut shop in California, she and her rumored boyfriend are seen licking a tray of donuts, but then Grande is caught saying, "I hate Americans. I hate America." She then (quite poorly) tried to explain it all away, but too late for her; it's already out there.
Now the official reason we're given for her withdrawal from the concert is that she's recovering from wisdom teeth extraction. Yeah, right. More than likely what needed to be extracted was her foot from her mouth. Anyone who spouts anti-American rhetoric is welcome to leave.
Also, Ariana Grande? Seriously? Could they find no one better? Whoever suggested Grande needs to be fired for having a poor taste in music.
