Giving up just two hits and two walks in 7.1 innings is enough to win for most anybody...except apparently Shelby Miller.
Miller dueled former teammate Carlos Martinez to a scoreless deadlock into the eighth inning, but took another tough loss after departing as the Braves fell 1-0 to the Cardinals.
Miller allowed a leadoff double to Kolten Wong to start the game, but didn't allow another hit until the eighth inning. Unfortunately, that second hit led to the only run of the game when Stephen Piscotty hit a sacrifice fly against Luis Avilan. Miller struck out four in his return to St. Louis, and received a warm ovation from the crowd.
Atlanta's offense managed six hits against Martinez, but also hit into three double plays while he was on the mound. Jace Peterson and A.J. Pierzynski each had two hits; Pierzynski hit into a double play, Atlanta's fourth, to end the game. Martinez struck out six in eight innings for the win.
Freddie Freeman had a pinch-hit at-bat in the seventh; Adonis Garcia recorded his first major-league hit in the second inning.
