(46-37) Charlotte Knights 5 vs. (42-40) Gwinnett Braves 1
- Jose Peraza, 2B: 2-4, 1 SB (22), .285/.310/.367
- Daniel Castro, SS: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, .279/.332/.308 (at Gwinnett)
- Mike Foltynewicz, SP: 6 IP, 5 H, 5 runs (1 ER), 3 BB, 8 K, 3.15 ERA
An error by Adonis Garcia in the top of the 6th would prove extremely costly as instead of getting out of jam and inning, it would load the bases for the deciding grand slam as Charlotte beats Gwinnett 5-1. Tough luck for Folty (although he did give up the homer) who up until then had a really strong outing. None of those four runs were earned and on the whole he looked good during the start. The offense was pretty quiet, tallying 1 run on just 4 hits with Jose Peraza getting two of them. Daniel Castro drove in the lone Gwinnett run while Mallex Smith failed to reach base for the first time in 5 games.
(32-45) Jackson Generals 2 vs. (38-39) Mississippi Braves 4
- Sean Godfrey, LF: 1-3, 1 run, 2 RBI, .291/.320/.399
- Steve Rodriguez, C: 2-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI, .200/.286/.238
- Tyrell Jenkins, SP: 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 3.00 ERA
Mississippi took a while to back Tyrell Jenkins' fine performance, but they put 4 runs up in the bottom of the 7th to beat Jackson 4-2. Sean Godfrey is slowly trying to get out of his funk since being promoted to Mississippi and did his part with 2 RBIs. Steve Rodriguez, who hasn't exactly had a banner year at the plate, proved to be the offensive difference maker in this one with a 2-run double that proved to be the game winner. Tyrell Jenkins pitched 7 strong innings and while getting the win and only giving up 2 earned runs is great, one of the most heartening aspects of the start was that he did not give up a single walk, which he had not done in 10 starts.
(45-34) Myrtle Beach Pelicans 16 vs. (39-40) Carolina Mudcats 4
- Keith Curcio, 2B: 1-5, 1 3B, 3 RBI, .281/.359/.385
- Joey Meneses, RF: 3-4, 1 run, 1 RBI, .228/.299/.339
- Max Povse. SP: 0.1 IP, 3 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
Yeesh, umm...yeah. This was an ugly one as even catcher Sal Giardina had to come in and pitch as Carolina got torched 16-4. There were some good points of the game including Giardina throwing a 1-2-3 9th inning. Keith Curcio hit a bases-clearing triple and both Jose Briceno and Joey Meneses had multi-hit games. But...yeah, thats pretty much it. Max Povse struggled mightily for the second straight outing (his first two since being promoted) and does not look quite ready for high-A but with his track record in Rome he deserves some time to figure things out. Plus, its not like the rest of the Carolina pitching staff could get an out as the bullpen gave up 9 ER with Richie Tate and the aforementioned Giardina being the lone non-offenders.
(35-44) Rome Braves 1 vs. (38-42) Charleston RiverDogs 0 (Rain Shortened Game)
- Ozhaino Albies, SS: 1-3, 1 run, .331/.384/.424
- Omar Obregon, 2B: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, .266/.338/.319
- Touki Toussaint, SP: 5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 0.96 ERA (in 2 starts)
Its a little disappointing that this game was stopped in the middle of the 6th, because Touki Toussaint was doing quite well in his second start as a Brave as Rome wins 1-0. Touki gave up just 1 hit and 2 walks in 5 innings of work. He certainly looks hard to square up against and definitely looked the part of a prize pitching prospect in this game. If you want to take a look at Talking Chop's scouting report of Touki, you can click here. Ozhaino Albies did Ozhaino things by extending his hitting streak to 16 games (his second streak of at least that length this season), took second on a throwing error, and scored the game's only run. Omar Obregon drove him in on an RBI double and that was pretty much it for the offense, although again they only got to play 6 innings.
(8-3) GCL Pirates 9 vs. (3-9) GCL Braves 3
- Colin Yelich, C: 2-3, 1 BB, .313
- Austin Riley, 3B: 1-4, 1 run, .189
- Alberto Rodriguez, RP: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 3.60 ERA
The struggles in the lower minors continued as the GCL Braves fell to the Pirates 9-3. Colin Yelich is filling in admirably for Lucas Herbert as he recovers from a torn meniscus, but the rest of the offense for the GCL Braves has not been particularly good outside of the play of Ronald Acuna and Justin Ellison. The pitching hasn't been much better and certainly wasn't in this game, with the earned runs being spread thorough the staff.
