The Arizona Diamondbacks took the second game against the Atlanta Braves, 8-4, thanks largely to the bat of David Peralta.
The 28-year-old left fielder got started the Diamondbacks' scoring in the first, fourth and fifth innings, and finished 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBI and a run. Peralta homered for the 12th time this season during the fourth inning, off of a 74-mph curveball from Mike Foltynewicz.
It was another disappointing outing for Folty, who lasted just 4.2 innings and gave up six earned runs on nine hits. He didn't seem to locate his fastball particularly well, and as we've seen before, Major League hitters have no problem catching up to upper-90s heat when the ball is coming right over the heart of the plate.
The breaking pitches didn't fair much better for him, as five of the nine hits Foltynewicz allowed came on either the curveball or the slider. Those pitches were especially exposed in the fourth and fifth innings (when Arizona scored five of their six runs), with 4-of-6 hits coming on breaking balls.
Over his last three starts, Foltynewicz has posted a 7.71 ERA (16.1 IP/14 ER).
One of the bright spots during this one came in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Cameron Maybin pulled off a slide that would make even Mike Trout proud, to create a hustle double. Maybin and Adonis Garcia were the only Atlanta hitters with multi-hit nights, and while the team couldn't pull off the win, it has been "fun to watch" Maybin in every facet of the game throughout this season.
While the the slide didn't affect the outcome of the game, it did spark a four-run Braves rally, which included a Jonny Gomes RBI-single and an Adonis Garcia RBI-double, paving the way for Nick Swisher to launch his first home run as a Brave -- a two-run shot that hit the foul pole in right field.
It was a nice night for the Atlanta bullpen -- well, until the ninth inning when Jake Brigham didn't record an out and allowed two runs after walking and hitting his first two batters. Other than that though, it was pretty solid. Newly acquired right-hander Edwin Jackson showed well in his Braves debut, throwing 2.1 no-hit innings and striking out four batters, Ross Detwiler didn't just collapse on the mound and Matt Marksberry induced a double-play and a groundout to get out of Brigham's jam in the ninth.
The Braves and Diamondbacks will both be looking to take this series Sunday, starting at 1:35 p.m. ET.
