(70-59) Gwinnett Braves 2, (67-63) Charlotte Knights 3

Box Score

  • Mallex Smith, CF: 1-4, .284/.324/.371
  • Joey Terdoslavich, 1B: 1-4, .289/.403/.485
  • Sean Kazmar, 2B: 2-4, 2B, R, .279/.312/.390
  • Jake Brigham, SP: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 5.19 ERA

Gwinnett was set back a bit in their push for the playoffs, dropping this game to the Knights on the same day the Wild Card Leading Clippers won. They put up a run in the top of the ninth, and had a runner on second for Jordan Lennerton, who lined out to the right fielder to end the game. Hector Olivera went 0-4 with a strikeout on the night, and is now hitting .121 (4-33) with the organization. He is still battling rust, and the Braves are being very patient to not rush him in his rehab. Vin Mazzaro and Carlos Fisher combined for 3 scoreless innings of relief after Jake Brigham's mediocre start. Daniel Castro knocked in a run while going 1-3 with a walk.

(65-59) Mississippi Braves 9 vs. (56-69) Pensacola Blue Wahoos 4

Box Score

  • Rio Ruiz, 3B: 3-4, 3B, 2 RBI, R, BB, .229/.333/.304
  • Emerson Landoni, SS: 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R, .295/.330/.379
  • Mycal Jones, CF: 2-5, 2B, RBI, 2 R, .400/.400/.600
  • John Gant, SP: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 1.61 ERA

Another solid start from John Gant kept the MBraves in first place, and extended their lead to 1.5 games over Mobile and Pensacola. Rio Ruiz kept up his good work in the last few games, extending his hitting streak to 9 games. During that span he is hitting .364 and has raised his OPS to the highest it has been since April 23rd. Emerson Landoni is making good use of his first chance of consistent playing time over a full season at one level, posting a career high batting average. Mauricio Cabrera pitched a scoreless inning with 2 strikeouts and a walk, lowering his ERA with Mississippi to 5.02.

(65-61) Carolina Mudcats 7 vs. (63-60) Wilmington Blue Rocks 0

Box Score

  • Dustin Peterson, LF: 4-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, .258/.328/.362
  • Connor Lien, RF: 0-3, HBP, .284/.344/.411
  • Johan Camargo, SS: 1-4, .266/.316/.350
  • Jose Briceno, C: 2-4, HR, R, .184/.218/.269
  • Yean Carlos Gil, SP: 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 5.91 ERA

Yean Carlos Gil dominated the Blue Rocks (I'm serious. Click the box score), and a 6 run 7th was more than enough to get a win. Dustin Peterson has been raking, and recorded his 2nd 4 hit game of the season and first since April 29th. Peterson fell into a horrible mid season slump, but has rebounded to hit .410 over his past 10 games and show more than enough reason to be bumped to Mississippi next season. Carolina managed all 7 runs on 9 hits without the benefit of a walk.

Rome Braves

Off day today. However, there is news, as Touki Toussaint has been placed on the DL with tricep soreness. This is after being scratched before Sunday's game. This is apparently just a precautionary move, though we almost certainly won't be seeing him anymore this season.

(29-31) Danville Braves 4 vs. (26-31) Johnson City Cardinals 3

Box Score

  • Austin Riley, 3B: 2-3, BB, .313/.406/.494
  • Justin Ellison, LF: 0-2, BB, RBI, .254/.297/.525
  • Daniel Cordero, SP: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1.35 ERA

After cooling off for about 2 games, Austin Riley is back on a 6 game hit streak, going 9-23 with 2 walks, a home run, and a double. Juan Yepez also had a hit and a walk in this one, and is hitting .294/.359/.500 after a really rough start at Danville. He has primed himself to make his start in full season ball next year, and should sneak into a few Top 30 lists, especially still being 17. Daniel Cordero has been lights out since his demotion, giving up 3 runs in 20 innings pitched. Ronald Acuna also had a very nice day, going 1-2 with 2 walks, 2 stolen bases, and an outfield assist.

Both games were rained out. No injuries here

DSL News

On the way back from the academy 5 players were involved in a car crash. P Luis Severino broke his leg, but all other injuries are being listed as minor. Randy Ventura was one of the passengers in the car, so we will keep an eye on his and the others status going forward. The Braves will now be wrapping all of their minor league players in 4 layers of bubble wrap before allowing them to enter a motor vehicle.
