The Braves have staged another improbable comeback against the Giants.
Adonis Garcia's third home run of the year gave the Braves an improbable 9-8 come-from-behind win over the Giants in 12 innings.
Early on, the game looked to be a laugher in favor of the Giants. Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford hit back-to-back homers in the second inning against Mike Foltynewicz; Buster Posey hit a two-run homer in the third, and Crawford hit his second homer of the game, a two-run shot, in the fourth to put the Braves in a 6-0 hole before the fifth inning.
Then came the sixth inning. The Braves had six hits but no runs against Matt Cain through five frames, but chased him with four straight hits in the sixth, including Jace Peterson's three-run homer. Nick Markakis singled home a fourth run in the inning to cut the deficit to two.
Chris Johnson, who was in the game because Freddie Freeman departed after two at-bats with an oblique injury, belted a home run to center leading off the seventh, bringing the Braves within a run, but the Giants knocked three soft singles in the ninth to restore the two-run lead. When the Braves came to bat in the home half, however, A.J. Pierzynski tied the score with a two-run homer off Santiago Casilla to send the game into extra innings.
Neither team staged much of a threat through the 10th and 11th innings. In the top of the 12th, though, Ross Detwiler got himself into a bit of trouble with a single and a hit batsman. Then that darn Posey singled home the go-ahead run against Arodys Vizcaino with two outs. Six of the Giants' eight runs scored with two outs.
Fortunately, all would be made well again. Following Brandon Crawford's throwing error, Adonis Garcia sent everyone home happy.
The two teams combined for 31 hits. Pierzynski's homer was one of his four hits in the game.
