Nick Markakis and A.J. Pierzynski drove in two runs each as the Atlanta Braves rally late to defeat the Miami Marlins 6-3 Tuesday night at Turner Field.
Tuesday's game featured a strong pitching matchup between Atlanta's Julio Teheran and Miami's Jose Fernandez. Neither pitcher disappointed early as they combined to retire the first 13 hitters of the game. Fernandez ran into some trouble in the fourth inning as the Braves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to RBI singles by Pierzynski and Joey Terdoslavich.
The score would remain 2-0 until the seventh when the Marlins led off the inning with three straight hits against Teheran including a two-run triple by Adeiny Hechavarria to tie the game. Teheran battled back as Jeff Mathis grounded out to third and Casey McGehee struck out. Ross Detwiler came on to face Dee Gordon who grounded to first and beat Terdoslavich's throw allowing Hechavarria to score to give Miami the lead.
It would be short lived as Atlanta would rally in the bottom half of the seventh against Kendry Flores thanks in part to some shaky defense from the Marlins infield. Todd Cunningham got things started with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Hechavarria. Pedro Ciriaco followed with another ground ball to Hechavarria who booted the exchange giving the Braves runners at the corners with just one out. Jace Peterson then worked Flores for a walk to load the bases.
Things got a little wacky from there. Dan Jennings brought in Mike Dunn to face Daniel Castro who grounded to Martin Prado at third base. Prado came home to nab Cunningham at the plate, but the call was overturned when the replay showed that Jeff Mathis wasn't on the plate when he took the throw. Markakis followed with a two run single that scored Ciriaco and Peterson to make the score 5-3. Atlanta added one more run in the inning as Castro scored on a ground out by Pierzynski.
Matt Marksberry, David Aardsma and Arodys Vizcaino held Miami scoreless over the final two innings with Vizcaino picking up his second save in as many nights.
