The Atlanta Braves rallied to force extra innings but failed to capitalize in a 7-5 loss to the Miami Marlins in 12 innings.
Atlanta trailed 5-4 heading into the ninth inning when Tyler Flowers launched his sixth home run of the season to send the game to extra innings. The game remained tied until the 12th when Jose Fernandez made his first pinch hit appearance of his career and delivered a two-run double off Casey Kelly to give the Marlins the lead and the win.
Braves starter Julio Teheran struggled early on allowing a pair of home runs in the first inning to Derek Dietrich and Marcell Ozuna. Teheran pitched into the seventh but allowed 11 hits and five earned runs on the evening.
Flowers, Erick Aybar and Chase d’Arnaud finished with two hits each for the Braves. d’Arnaud hit his first career home run in the fifth to give Atlanta a brief lead. Ozuna cracked four hits for the Marlins while old friend Martin Prado had a good day going 3 for 6.
The two teams will continue their series on Saturday with Fernandez scheduled to pitch for the Marlins. The Braves have yet to announce a starter and may have to make a roster move after Casey Kelly was forced into action for two innings tonight.
