Padres vs. Braves preview: Atlanta aims for sweep behind Mike Foltynewicz

Day baseball at Turner Field!

MLB: Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Braves have a rare opportunity on Thursday afternoon, especially within the context of the 2016 season. This year’s campaign hasn’t always been a pleasure to follow, but the Braves have the chance to complete a three-game sweep over the San Diego Padres and Brian Snitker will be sending Mike Foltynewicz to the hill with that in mind.

Editor's Note: New players win cash in their first league or get their entry fee refunded! Offered in partnership with FanDuel.

Foltynewicz, in short, has been Atlanta’s second-best starting pitcher this season, posting a 4.30 cumulative ERA across 102.2 innings. While that isn’t a lights-out figure by any means, the powerful right-hander has displayed flashes of brilliance, and Foltynewicz navigated 7.2 innings of one-run ball against the Giants in his last outing on Aug. 27.

In opposition, the Padres will deploy 26-year-old right-hander Jarred Cosart. The once-touted prospect has bounced around in recent seasons, but Cosart has been quite effective since joining San Diego. In five starts since arriving from Miami, he has put together a 2.88 ERA, and Cosart has allowed just one earned run in each of his last three starts.

Midday baseball is always fun, and while it may not be standard operating procedure, we’ll be here to guide you through. Stay tuned throughout the afternoon for all the latest.
