The Atlanta Braves look to pull off a rare series win against the Washington Nationals on Sunday as the two teams meet for the final time at Turner Field.
Trea Turner continued to torment the Braves in a 7-2 win on Friday in the series opener. Atlanta answered back on Saturday with a 7-3 victory despite more heroics from Turner. Atlanta turns to Matt Wisler for Sunday who is looking to bounce back from a rough outing earlier this week.
To describe Wisler’s season as up and down would probably be understating the fact. He got off to a good start and then struggled so much in July that he ended up back in Triple-A.
Wisler looked sharp over his first two starts in his return to the majors allowing six hits and two earned runs over 14 innings in a pair of victories. However, he suffered oblique soreness in the second of those starts and was forced to miss a week. He wasn’t nearly as sharp in his return allowing 10 hits and six runs over 4 1⁄3 innings in a loss to the Marlins.
The Nationals will counter with Joe Ross who is also fighting his way back from injury. Ross hasn’t made a major league start since July 2 due to shoulder inflammation. Ross will be on a tight pitch count for Sunday’s start.
If the Braves hope to pull out a victory, they are going to have to find a way to slow down Turner who is hitting .482 with six homers and 16 RBI in 12 games this season against Atlanta. Four of those homers have come at Turner Field where he is hitting a crisp .444.
